Ignition Key Won't Turn
Decided to move this to the correct section.

So I parked the '06 90 in the garage with the wheel slightly turned. Got out and it was sticking out a bit so I just pushed it in so I could close the garage door. Went out 2 days later and I could not turn the key in the ignition switch. Thought it might be locked with the steering wheel but turning that back and forth would not unlock the key switch. When I turned the wheel you could see the key in the ignition jump just a bit so I assume it is the barrel (?). I ended up pushing the 90 back out of the garage about half a meter and tried it again. This time the key started to turn but with a considerable amount of resistance. When I got the steering wheel unlocked I straightened out the wheels and now the key turns easily. Is this normal? I assume something is not right and would like to fix it so I don't get stranded somewhere having the same issue. Did a search but couldn't find anything similar. Is the switch faulty maybe? Below is hopefully a video showing how the key/barrel jumped when I turned the steering wheel. Thanks for any guidance.

The steering lock on mine is a Censored to get off. My sons were messing about in the drivers seat while I was packing up the camping stuff.
I thought I was going to have to walk until I could get a signal to call for help, but managed to get it freed by lots of forcibly turning of the wheel and finally the key moved enough to get the steering lock off.

Yours and mine might be the exception but I found the steering lock to be very unlike other cars Shocked Craig.

For the key to jump like that, the peg that locates in an indent in the column isn't retracting and clearing enough, probably just needs some lube as its a very primitive type of system used on numerous BL cars from the 60's forward.

Strip the cowls off the column and use a spray lube between the column and the lock - easier to do than explain.

Same happened to me, new barrel sorted it - there is an internal roll pin that had shifted causing the mechanism to jam., possibly repairable but I didn't want to take the risk. I drilled out the shear bolts that hold the barrel to the column, some people tap them with a punch but never worked for me. Fairly straight forward on a Td5, plenty of room to work once the steering wheel and cowl are removed.

Thank you for all the replies. You all mention removing the cowl so I can access the ignition barrel. How do I remove the lower cowl with the ignition switch with all those stalks coming out of it? Each stalk has a little boot but how do I get the cowl over the stalks themselves? 2006 90 originally registered in Italy

there are some screws on the underside of the cowl, remove these, the cowl is in two pieces and will now come apart, the rubber boots remain on the switches and the ignition barrel stays in situ. In practice less complicated than it sounds - the fun starts when you come to remove the barrel/steering lock mechanism. Remember to order new bolts (they don’t have to be the shear variety) and a column clamp in addition to lock/barrel/ignition switch. Take some photos before you disconnect any wires

Thanks revd. 4 long screws and 2 short ones and the lower cowl pulled away although it would not detach from the steering wheel so I'm not sure if that has to be removed as well?

At this point I lubricated the key slot and barrel with liquid graphite (so it dries dry) to see how that feels. Next stage if I feel any resistance will be to replace the barrel. I just need to find one. LR has the 2007+ but I couldn't find an earlier one, but haven't checked all suppliers yet. 2006 90 originally registered in Italy

Seven screws in total, see pic, you can do it with s/wheel in situ but just makes the job harder and only takes 2 minutes to remove.

Your location says Ontario so check out 3Brother in Paris (near London). Their site says that they have it in stock. Ask for Tyler he’ll sort you out. Same day shipping and usually next day delivery in Ontario.

Also consider joining Ottawa Valley Land Rovers we’re the largest and oldest LR club in Canada lots of helpful people there too! 👍🏻

Good luck👇🏻
