Oil Cooler O Rings Td5
Morning all, can anyone shed any light on where the green O rings on the left of the picture should be fitted on the oil cooler assembly on a Td5? I have looked at all possibilities and there is nowhere obvious they should fit. The banjo bolts have Doughty type washers and the heat exchanger has a pair of fat o rings that fit flush against the body of the cooler. Help!

Thanks, Martin

Additionally - there are no O rings like these on the old assembly that came out, that's why I'm confused.

On this diagram I can see two used. Have you none on yours?

Thanks for replying. When I unpacked the kit I was not sure what the green o rings were for so I meticulously disassembled the old cooler assembly to see if there was anything like that on the original set up. No such o rings exist in the old cooler and the new cooler is not significantly different in its construction.

The possible option is they squeeze between the heat exchanger and the casing but because of their size it would be hit and miss as to whether they’d actually seal because of their diameter and thickness.

“ I ordered 2 O-rings part #ERR7098 which are green. I believe these go around the bolts that pull the cooler to the housing. Does anyone know the actual part number of the black O-rings that go inside the actual cooler that tend to flatten out over time? Thank you.
The parts diagram shows the part, but no number is listed. FCE37F18-B770-4A7E-A524-8DAAF3F69FC7.pngFCE37F18-B770-4A7E-A524-8DAAF3F69FC7.pngE5CB3BA3-B45A-46A3-ACAA-149827576B19.jpeg”

I was about to tear it all apart and against my better judgement fit the o rings against the black o rings which just feels totally wrong.

I won’t do that now, so if we fail we fail together!!!

Hi, I don’t think they’re available on their own. I tried to make up a full kit from parts but the banjo bolts, Doughty washers and fat o rings proved hard to find so I went for the full kit including the new casting.

As a side question, do all TD5's (10p.15p etc) have oil coolers? 1999 Defender TD5 110

I’m pretty sure that all Td5s have oil coolers.

I did this job just last month.

You can replace the old rubber black o-rings with the new green o-rings. The color difference is just a different manufacturer. Don't combined them on top of each other. The ones I ordered were brown.

Here's a picture before I ordered the new rubber rings. Remove the old black rubber o-rings with a small pick and replace with your new green rings. When you reinstall the housing, the green rings will compress properly.

Thanks Tandy, what’s confusing is the new heat exchanger comes with o-rings already installed and the green rings are supplied loose with the Dowty washers and banjo bolts. The green o-rings don’t appear to be of a sufficient cross sectional area to form a seal between the heat exchanger and the housing.
