To eliminate the Roamerdrive as the cause of the noise can you not remove the roamer drive and refit the standard intake shaft?
The copper can be the roamerdrive syncros going bad or it can be the washers on the center diff of the LT230. I had an LT230 with a hell of a whine, I changed it with an old one I had without changing a thing and the noise is completely gone. Then I fitted a Roamerdrive and it has been perfect, no noise whatsoever. Whine noise is typically associated with poor gear meshing dt wear or bearing failure (misalignment). |

Mine made a high-pitched whine so I got it hot, drained the overdrive and transfer box, put the drain plug in and put about a litre of diesel in each to flush any sticky deposits then drained again - left for ages until no more drips.
Replaced drain plugs and refilled both with GL4 - the high-pitched noise stopped and has not returned. |

I had a whine develop on my Roamerdrive over a period of time, particularly on the over-run. (E.g over the brow of a small hill, foot off the accelerator = whine). It wasn’t so bad under load/drive. This unit was brand new to me, properly fitted, and with the correct oils from the outset.
I lived with it for a bit, but it wasn’t going to get any better by itself and I had a few long trips coming up. I’d also noticed a thread on LR4x4 where a couple of guys had taken them apart and I thought ‘how hard can it be?’…. ( https://lr4x4.com/topic/111412-roamerdrive-defender-noise/page/7/#comments ) My content is about page 6 onwards. During the process I found that 3 of the bearings in my unit were unbranded. They felt very smooth and ran OK in the hand, but in-situ on the unit they were notchy. I think they were just a little out of spec. I had some email communication with Ray Wood (Roamerdrive designer) at the time and he made a good defence of the bearings they selected, also pointing out that for a small manufacturer on the west of Canada, sourcing bearings from Chinese suppliers was a lot easier. Questions about bearings etc are well-discussed on the thread. In any event I got it back together (phew! I’m no engineer!) onto the car, and it’s worked fine since. Not sure how helpful this is to the original question, but it might be interesting to have a little bit more of an in-depth look into how the thing works. *sorry, the URL thing hasn’t worked properly. I’m doing this on an iPad rather than a PC and can’t get it to play nicely. Typical me buying a OD (said was pretty much brand new - I suspect it was a noisy one and the guy sold it on to muggins here) which is bu99ered.
I'll see if another one comes up S/H. |

Obviously the LT230 can happily whine all by itself, but as has been said above, there’s an easy enough way to check which is the culprit, by taking the OD off. (Assuming you have the original PTO cover and gearbox output shaft gear. I can never remember if it’s the ‘output’ gear from the gearbox, or the ‘input’ gear into the TBox!)
Then, when the OD is off, if the TBox is quiet enough, you can consider your options. Having done it once I’d happily take it apart again, but if that’s not an option I would look for a local engineering/gearbox workshop and ask them to have a look/replace the bearings. It is a fairly straightforward job. That way, for the price of a 2nd hand unit you’d have one you could have more confidence in. The roamerdrives are pretty easy to rebuild, the only issue I came up against was that I needed to have the outside of a socket turned down so it would fit. Other than that I got the bearings from bearing suppliers in the UK and advice from Ray Wood in Canada.
I was in a similar position to you, bought a 2nd hand unit of this forum then not long after it was noisy. Been refitted for around 9years now and covered around 100,000miles, wouldn’t be without it! Cheers Will 2005 90 XS 1954 86'' Series 1 tilt 1968 88” 2A 200tdi 2002 110 Hardtop |
