Rumble and vibration in 5th/6th Gear
Hi everyone,

I drive a 2.4 Puma Defender, and I’ve noticed a strange rumble or vibration when accelerating hard in higher gears. I hope someone here can help.

The problem:

When I accelerate fully in 5th gear from 60–80 km/h, or in 6th gear from 80–100 km/h, I feel a deep rumble or vibration.

    It feels like it’s coming from the engine, chassis, or drivetrain.

    It doesn’t feel smooth – like the car is struggling or under heavy load.

    No problem when accelerating from higher speeds, like 100+ km/h.

    No issue in 1st to 4th gear.


It feels like:

    The car is not getting enough air or fuel,

    Or something in the drivetrain is vibrating under load,

    Like a deep, low-frequency vibration in the body or under your feet.


My questions:

    Has anyone had this issue – only under full load in 5th/6th gear?

    Could this be fuel-related or a mechanical drivetrain issue?

    Maybe VCV, MAP, MAF Sensors?

    What would you check first?

Prop UJ’s, check their condition, regrease.
If that makes a difference that’s something to look at, possibly replace, check slider as well, but no need to take apart.

If it’s power wise it’ll be VCV, but the VCV failing will produce a lack of power, there shouldn’t be much else symptoms wise at that speed.

It could be imbalanced grease over time in the UJ cups as well.

Check tyre treads for excess grit or stones, that can cause imbalance. WeWillWin🇬🇧🇺🇸

You will need to start discounting things to identify where the issue is, so other things to check.

1. Wheel bearings
2. Brakes , to see if there is a slight binding. Are discs very hot after a high speed journey. Ps better to use a cheap infrared thermometer than touch with fingers !
3. Swivels for damage and grease level.
4. Diffs , especially front Diff
5 CV joints
