Daisy III
Hello all!

Have recently picked up my 3rd defender, which I’m planning on being a very long term keeper for family trips / camping etc.

It all started with Daisy I, a 110 CSW TD5, which turns out was used by the Spanish LR Experience team.

Daisy II was a bit of a hodge podge of parts. A galv chassis, late TD5 body, but most importantly the 3.9 V8, which made a great noise.

Now to Daisy III, a 2010 XS USW

Plans? Make it the “perfect” landy! Long term id like to rebuild it on a galv chassis, but short term it will be a rolling resto.

- all round soundproofing
- LOF clutch bits
- Ashcroft (or LOF) drive shaft
- Optimill shiny bits
- Solid half shafts
- NAS rear step
- roof rack & tent (maybe trailer)
- work & spot lights
- stereo upgrades
- wheel carrier
- storage racking / drawers in the rear

Started the sound proofing journey this week. 2mm silent coat + 6mm generic closed cell foam off eBay. I also ran some 4mm2 multicore to the rear left panel that will eventually be connected up to the battery, plus a 1mm2 for ignition/cut off switching. I also ran some extra speaker wire in case I add speakers to the top corners.

Found the closed cell foam extremely faffy, so wasn’t the best job. Conveniently it’s all covered by the headlining and some new Mud Stuff side panels. Annoyingly I had to trim ~5mm from the standard side panels in order to accommodate the silent coat + foam + mud stuff panels.

I also replaced the fir tree securing rubbish with M6 aluminium rivnuts.

Only the rear door and load bay sides and roof completed so far, I’m resisting from driving it until it’s all done so I’m not (too) disappointed with the sound improvement.

On to the rest of the car!

So Daisy took her first trip to the garage in the summer. We had a trip planned to Cornwall and given she's at about 100k miles, I didn't fancy the output shaft popping out half way. Not something I could (reasonably) do on my drive, so garage it was for an Ashcroft output shaft and an LOF powerspec clutch.

I should probably upgrade to a trailer soon...

For the journey I also wanted to easily keep an eye on the babies and so I picked up a Wolfbox TriPro dashcam. It has the standard front and rear cameras but a useful 3rd "cabin" camera that I extended and hung on the dog guard for easy spying. It is much better than looking at secondary mirrors through the crappy LR mirror, and the reverse camera is equally handy. Do I love the device? Not completely, it's fairly expensive and definitely does not have that OEM feel. The power supply sometimes doesn't want to boot up and the connection to the cabin camera is pretty flaky, but it is providing good amount of convenience so far.

It's mounted to the dash using a short RAM connected to the Mud Stuff RAM ball.

Cornwall trip was a delight, other than the rear diff becoming rather noisy, so thanks to Nigel at Xcess 4x4, I had a shiny new upgrade with ATB which stayed pretty shiny despite me dropping it on his driveway the second I got my hands on it...

I took the opportunity to also fit solid half shafts from LOF and cap head bolts, but evidently took no photos of that excitement.

I also prepared (slightly) for the winter and fitted two extra washer jets in the LHD bulkhead holes. I couldn't stomach the cost of some of the fancy jets (and twice over) so the standard LR units it was. A much improved wiping experience.

Next was MOT time, and the only (major) was the rear ARB droplinks, so a new set from Gwyn Lewis with grease nipples solved that. As you can see there is quite a bit of spring crust which will be sorted soon but getting through the MOT was first priority.

Next jobs? Last touches of getting the dash back together as well as finish the second row light fitment, then I am looking to pick up a cargobear roof rack (well, the first section to start with) so that I can mount some lights..
