The bronco raptor is actually *wider* than my H1 Smile

I don't know what the rules are in PA (oddly they have absurd alcohol laws that date back to the Quaker settlement era) but there are ways around that - such as titling and registering the HMMWV in Utah or Montana. There is a whole industry setup around that... most people do it to avoid onerous local takes but others use it to register vehicles that are not allowed to be titled for on-road use in their home states.

You can find working, running HMMWVs for $5k no problem. They might need a little work but they're out there. I highly recommend getting a turbo/4speed one if you plan on taking it on the highway at all. The 6.2L/3spd trucks have a max speed of 55mph.

We are looking to buy in the state college area my partners got a huge family network there.

This is the braptor we had for the day, felt a little more composed than the 150 raptor we demoed

She has family out in amish areas which was definitely ‘interesting’ but the fact we could actually enjoy the state parks (no 10mph speed limit on the lakes) sold it to me… my profession is in the merchant marine and owning my own boat in the uk is pointless. Either have it on loch lommond and every time there Is a storm, end up with a huge insurance claim or keep it in the Lake District and unable to enjoy it.

I have had a look at the military auction humvees more than once… figured I’d get a project one eventually. Will be hard to build up my tool kit over stateside but plan to send a shipping container if I fully commit in a couple of years.

Your (presumably) metric based tools won't be a complete waste when working on a HMMWV as the engine uses (for the most part) metric sockets/wrenches - however the chassis, body, suspension all use Imperial unit hardware.

It's always a treat while working on the truck to figure out what size wrenches to use.

When you move to PA, make sure you catch an Amish barn-raising. Its legitimately an impressive production.

Those Bronco Raptors are impressive, if impractical little things. The three amber lights in the grille indicate that the overall width is more than 80". My truck has them as well. There are a couple of other marking requirements for vehicles of this width.

As for the difference between the F150 Raptor and the Bronco Raptor - over here we don't talk about the normal F150 raptor because its only got a V6. The Raptor R (or Raptor: Real) is the one we acknowledge. That is the real truck to get. I don’t think I’ve seen a Bronco in real life, but I think they are quite nice looking.
The 150, are a bit pickup like to me, a bit generic, I think the F250 is much nicer.

The Defender has a mix of metric and imperial fixings, most people find it quite endearing I think. Laughing

The F150 and 250 are nearly identical except in size.

Even in America, the F250 is tough to park due to its length. Whereas most households have an F150 or equivalent, F250's (and Chevy/Ram 2500+) are used more as contractor/commercial vehicles. If you have a large boat or camper/RV you tow regularly, then the F250+ range is worth owning but otherwise they're just a bit much.

Since the 4WD on the FJ Cruiser up and died on me earlier this week, I had to drive the H1 in the salt and nasty weather yesterday... so while it was above freezing, I gave both the Defender and Hummer a well deserved bath. By the time I was done, the driveway was an ice skating rink as it was only above freezing for about an hour.

Rather you than me, rather similar weather here lately.

There is a H1 on eBay U.K. right now and a H3 for just £7k with relatively low miles.
Might be LHD, but still a lot of truck for that price I think. Considering most go for £12k plus minimum and the rest. ____\We|Will|Win/___

Oddly enough, my old H1 that was t-boned and flipped over back in 2021, is for sale in ... Germany! right now. Looks like they did a great job restoring it.

Been a minute since I checked in here. My Defender has refused to become a drama llama (aka everything works, nothing has broken) so I haven't been as active on the forums.

After my wife and I took a nice weeklong trip to Iceland where we rented a classic Defender (wow, that was .... for sure. If you want to read about it, you can here: https://landroverforums.com/forum/2020-def...d-126301/) I decided to go ahead and install some parts I had sitting around for more than a year. The H1 came with a 10,300lbs (4675kg) gross vehicle weight rating. With about a 7600lbs (3447kg) curb weight, that meant I could theoretically haul about 3000lbs (1360kg) of cargo. However, I've added heavy items such as a 600lbs (272kg) roof rack, a 200lbs (90kg) brush guard and 300lbs (136kg) of rocker panel protection (aka sliders). Additionally I always carry a full tool kit and a full recovery kit in the rig - she's heavy. The curb weight is now 9000lbs (4082kg) or thereabouts so I've lost a lot of my weight carrying capacity.

Luckily for me, AM General started beefing up the suspension and braking components on the Humvee during the Gulf War, and those components are 100% bolt on to my truck. These components are known as "12k" components since they increase the gross vehicle weight rating to 12,100lbs (5390kg). I already had done the 12k brakes, but I needed to do the 12k hubs and half shafts in order to complete it all. So thats what I did... I replaced all 4 hubs, all 8 ball joints and all 4 halfshafts (CV shafts). Also replaced all of the ABS sensors and installed locking hardware on the halfshaft to ensure that the bolts don't back out and eat away at the brake calipers. This job took about 2 weeks to complete since I work slowly and methodically, everything is super heavy (the hubs themselves weight 80lbs each) and everything is torqued to mega-spec.

It’s surprising how the weight can build up with add on parts isn’t it.

Those crab walk kits are cool stuff, but I’m not sure exactly how often you’d even need that or if it would even be that useful at times. ____\We|Will|Win/___

Handling is unchanged. There is no real "handling" on 37" mud terrains.

The rear steer is something that is super easy to do on the H1's since the rear hubs have the same exact components as the fronts. My buddy Mark at ModMafia has a 35 degree rear steer kit that has active mechanical centering lock HOWEVER all of these kits require that you get rid of the 17 gallon aux diesel tank which is something that I cannot do.

I'm about to take a 4 day camping trip in 2 weeks where we'll be doing about 250 miles between fuel stations which is going to be pushing it with the trailer attached. Last weekend I had planned on going on a 3-night, 500 mile trip through the North Maine Woods - which is the most remote and desolate area on the whole east coast of the US. The roads are all dirt or gravel and they are heavily traveled by logging trucks. The surface often reflects a lunar landscape with 8-12" deep potholes and no line available to avoid them.

After visiting a B-52 crash site memorial from the 1960's we headed north. Made it about 30 miles in before we stopped for lunch on the first day, and I had the distinct smell of coolant coming from under the hood. Turns out that at some point, probably while doing 30mph over the aforementioned lunar landscape, the fan went through the shroud, which went through the radiator near the top tank. Due to the unique way in which the radiator is laid down at an angle, it was impossible to tell where exactly the hole(s) was so we smeared a whole stick of JB Weld putty up in there. I turned around and started heading back to civilization where I could get a tow - about 40 miles. I had an extra empty diesel jerrycan that I filled up with lake water. Stopped every 10 miles and topped off the leaking radiator. Engine never boiled over and I had good temps the whole way back.

I also had my trailer behind me, and on the way back out of the woods, my bed rack collapsed...causing my RTT to crush everything underneath. Thankfully the really expensive stuff is just slightly damaged with cosmetic scratches only - but the experience has made me sour on the idea of a camping trailer. The M1102 torsion axle is rated for far too much weight than my little camping setup puts on it, and it causes the trailer to bounce everywhere. Indeed the guy behind me in line said that my trailer was basicall airborne the entire time while it jumped from pothole to pothole. I think I'll figure out a way to get the RTT on top of the truck and keep everything consolidated.

The wife ended up driving 3 hours round trip in the L663 to come rescue me. Bless her.

Ah well...its only money.

Unlikely that a stick got up there. It would have had to go through a lot of underside protection to get up there.

No - what happened is one of two things - both are known failures:

1) the fan shroud reinforcement bracket wasn't reinstalled on my truck after we did the engine swap to the P400 on it. The fan itself can produce so much suction that it actually pulls the top of the shroud in towards the fan until it makes contact with the blades and then poof. Shroud and fan explode.

2) the terrain could have caused the engine mount on the driver's side (left in our case) where the rubber puck that holds together two sets of bolts actually separates and can cause the whole engine to twist which causes the fan to hit the shroud. There are actually instructions available (which of course I didn't do ahead of time but will do it now) to use standard chain to wrap around the engine mount so that this doesn't happen.
