Speakers playing up
Some of the speakers in my 110 are cutting in and out, seems to be mainly the nearside big on on the underside of the dash. If I thump the dash it comes in but immediately goes off again, sometimes comes in when going over a bump. Drivers side and both top ones seem to be working fine. I took the near side one out and everything is connected. Any pointers what else to check? Can speakers fail? I suppose I could get a voltmeter to check it's getting power. 2011 110 USW

Hi, It could be the speaker, or the wiring, or the output from the head unit.
Easy first thing to try, swap the affected speaker(s) left to right. If the problem moves to the driver side, it's the speaker, replace it, or replace the pair.

If the problem stays in the same place, next easy thing to check is the wiring for physical damage behind the dash. Then unplug/ replug the radio harness connector(s). The radio will have to come out of the dash for this.

If the wiring is ok and firmly connected but still an issue, try a replacement radio, any one with modern ISO connectors, temporarily plugged into the harness.**
After that I would then use a multimeter to test continuity of the speaker wires for breaks, NOT while the radio is plugged in and switched on!

** if you haven't got an ISO lead currently, that may not be easy to do. See thread above, ref ISO adapters.

I did check what I could see of the wiring and all seemed ok. Could be the head unit, but at least I've got something to go on. 2011 110 USW

A bit more on this. Everything is secure at the back of the head unit, and seemingly at the speakers. But my bass speakers are now constantly cutting in and out, if I hit the dash they come back on but go off of I hit a bump in the road. I'm assuming somewhere the wires are breaking down. I don't really want to pull the dash board apart.

Any ideas? 2011 110 USW

I've noticed something really odd with this. With volume on full I don't really get the problem. As soon as I reduce volume I get the cutting in and out. I've tried jiggling the wires but that made no difference.

Any ideas? So I just need to see an auto electrician? 2011 110 USW

I've made some progress with this. The wiring is ok and I've now got all six speakers working, however my drivers front bass speaker is blown, it's really fuzzy and sounds awful, does anyone have a part number so I can get a replacement please? 2011 110 USW

Check the impedance of the speaker from its terminals to the rear against others when turned off.

If it shows a dissimilar read in ohms then it’s probably not good.

For example if you have a SVC 4ohm speaker the reading for it should be something like 3.8 - 4.2Ohms.
Make sure the connections are clean, tight and not degraded Defenders get a lot of moisture and th terminals get corroded.

If you were getting cutting in or cutting out that’s probably loose connections, and remember the HU can only really produce upto 50w max per Chanel without an Amp, anything above 40w per speaker they will struggle to to push without clipping. NEVER SURRENDER! ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

I've already sorted the loose connections, hence now being aware they all work apart from one speaker which is blown and producing rubbish sound, hence my request for a part number for replacement. 2011 110 USW

You'll probably find an aftermarket speaker that gives far better sound quality than the OEM for not a lot of money.

The LR fit ones are not capable of taking much power, I could be wrong but I think if I remember rightly they are paper cone too, so degrade with time and ambient moisture.

Nearly all aftermarket ones are synthetic plastics and butyl rubber etc, a lot more resilient to the weather and better longevity and performance once they are broken in. Then you get better excursion and SQ. NEVER SURRENDER! ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧
