Sliding Rear Window - water ingress help request

Good day All,

I have read thought what I believe are all the threads on this topic but I can't seem to find any pointers/answers.

I recently pulled the lower window felts out, gave them a clean and put back in yet since then, I assume, I am finding a very isolated leak. Water isn't coming over the felt and then the track and pouring over but rather somewhere else.

The leak can be seen dripping where the yellow mark is on this photo and it doesn't take much water being sprayed on the rear glass to initiate it.

The idea of removing the interior side window moulding to see is an obvious one but wanted to check here if anyone can suggest something else before I start taking the interior apart.

I did a few more water tests and at first was convinced it was leaking from the top of the window frame but to be certain I pulled the interior window surround to have a closer look. Which by the way was a lot easier than I thought with the hardest bit being the large firs!

The leak in fact is coming from the body foam seal which has a large gap. After readying the many threads on the matter here, am I correct in saying Sikaflex 221 is to be used here?

I assume I am to fill the gap from the inside as much as possible, with the hopes it comes through to the other side? I noticed they sell a pre-treatment for the 221. Is getting this advisable?

As strange as it sounds, I find myself happy to find the fault as now it's down to just sorting it

More so that I didn't find any nasty surprises behind the window trim, bar a wee bit of rust just behind the B pillar. Next on my list!

That’s a very smart interior!

I used sikaflex 291 on the outside foam only and it worked well! I used masking tape and did whole way around.

Thanks for the tip and compliment Jerry!

I've been reading for the past hour on here and it seems some are giving warnings against Sikaflex. Perhaps I am over thinking it...

I want to avoid putting a full bead of sealant on the exterior and hoping I can fill that void from the side.

I also used it to seal the bulkhead foam and around the windscreen blocks- It stopped all leaks and has been watertight and outside for 8 years. Only negative is it cracks / breaks down a bit after roughly 5years or so, so I just reapplied over the top! I did mask up beforehand to get really clean lines and went over with a wet finger! Good luck.

Why not use a Butyl mastic seal, , such as Screenseal from wayside adhesives.

It’s non setting so will never crack, water and uv proof, easy to apply, smooth, and to press into gaps. plus lasts 60+ years and will not cause corrosion.
