Replacing standard front bumper- which to go for?
The rust on the [standard] front bumper on my 2014 XS has reached the stage where I'm planning to replace it. I want one that still looks standard but doesn't suffer as badly once the coating has been blasted by the front wheels (and I'm not in the market for the front shield from Mr Lewis). I need one with holes for the end caps but that doesn't seem to reduce the available range.
I'd originally planned to buy a galvanised bumper and spray it satin black. But now I've seen Craddocks do a 'powder coated over zinc' bumper (DPB501190PMAV). Has anyone any feedback on this? (Or advice that doesn't suggest repainting the existing one.) Cheers, Guy.

It is an improvement over the original Land Rover bumper painting process, however if you want better, stick to your original plan, buy a britpart galvanized bumper - it is remarkably good, and then paint it with your choice of paint. The current one lasted ten years? Stainless costs hundreds (and equally likely to be accidentally damaged)?

Buy the cheapest possible, paint it black if not already, replace it as and when, and think of the front bumper as a "consumable".

Id get a galvanized one and paint it.

Bumpers take abuse from all sorts - not only actual landrover use, but also people in car parks etc.

You can't touch up a powdercoated unit. You can a painted one.


Powder over non galvanized is a very temporary solution too. One stone chip and the water gets in behind and delaminates the powder over time.

I bought a Black powered coated quad DRL bumper from Manor automotive. They also do a twin DRL and a plain NO DRL bumper. The plain one is £240.

I checked with them and they stated it was 316, not 304 grade stainless steel. So extremely resistant to corrosion. The steel is 2.5mm thick and the bumper has holes for end caps.

Like others I’m not a fan of powder coating, however if stone chips do happen then the 316 should not corrode and blow the powder coating. Time will tell if I’m correct.

Before fitting I sprayed the back, insides, and bottom of the bumper with Bilt Hamber Dynax UB wax for added protection.

Then used Bilt Hamber double speed wax on the front and top to protect the visible black powder coat.

To refurbish the rubber end caps I gave them a good clean with Meguiars APC, diluted 1 part APC to 10 parts water. Then coated with car plan black trim wax. An old school product but works really well on End caps, mud flaps etc. The end caps looked brand new after this.

Try Wildbear.

Not as good fit as original but surprisingly good price for standard style in stainless.

Don't buy if you have standard rubber A bar and don't like tweaking things to make them fit, the Wildbear one sits about 8mm further forward so A bar brackets wont fit.

I'm on my 4th bumper and went for galvanized this time. I actually like the look as opposed to painted.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions.
I've decided to go with galvanised (I found a 3mm version at a reasonable price- apparently standard is 2.5mm). I'll see if I can get it powder coated locally. I was in similar situation with front bumper (as well as roof rack) but decided to give them another chance. So cleaned and repainted. Checking closely you can see some places are not ideally flat like from the factory, but overall good result. That was combined with bigger de-rusting service (frame protection, replacing bolts etc). I had to replace side bars/steps, it was too late to try to restore them.
I'm not sure this bumper will survive another 10 year, but after one year I do not see any issues.
I'm not sure it that matters, I have a winch installed, so potentially not all 3rd party bumpers will fit in my case.

I needed one after around 8 years, managed to get another standard one and sprayed it gloss black.

total around £80


I was looking at the uproar ones a while back and a plain one I thought was around £300 shocked to just look now and a plain one is £550 and if you want lights £750 to £1200

They have shot up?

Just looked and a new basic black bumper £110 with end caps. I could flat this down and respray in gloss, buy 5 bumpers for the same price..
