I have had a similar issue and traced it back to a faulty connection on the fuel pump relay. Other symptoms were no engine or glow plug lights with ignition on, engine cranks but never starts.

Nothing technical I'm afraid. When it doesn't start I give the relay a wiggle/push it back into the holder. That sorts the issue for a while. I should probably remove the relay and change/clean the terminals.
Next time you don't get the engine/glow plug lights when trying to start give the relay a wiggle. If it clicks and you get lights then I'd say that's your issue. |

MIL lamp, Glow lamp, main relay and glow plug relay are directly controlled from engine ECU. When you switch the ingnition on, both MIL and GLOW lamps should light at least for short time. If not, the there is a problem in wires, problem with nono powered ECU (like problem with wires for main relay) or problem in ECU itself.
Bad contacs of relays can be "solved" by cleaning them a carefull pressing with pliers, to make the female contacts more tight. If the contacs are already too soft from overheating, this will help only for sort time, and the only solution is to replace the contacs. Also it is ossible to remove relay, remove the top cover and check internals, I have seen relays with burnt or totally mising contacs inside. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo  |

Ok Brilliant, this is really helpful will have a look. It definitely seems like a connection issue, loose or bad contact so I will start by checking the contacts make sure they are clean and tight fitting. Pretty sure the ECU is ok as don't have oil on the ECU plug as checked that so hoping that's all ok.

Oil in cables or ECU is not a problem, voltages there are low and oil is good insulator. Problem is often in weak pins in connectors, resulting in poor electrical contact and replacing wiring harnesses, because it is easy. A bit of oil in connector or better propre dielectric grease is good to prevent oxidation of contacts.
