Defender 90 sunroof seal?
Hi all

I have a drip from my factory fitted sunroof after it has rained. I’ve cleaned the glass part and smeared silicone on the sealing rubber but still get the drip.

Does the seal simply pull out of the channel where it sits or is it clamped in by the sunroof surround. The only video I could find on YouTube shows a guy replacing the seal on a Discovery 2. Is this the same procedure for a Defender?

How irritating. Two things worth checking before ripping out the seal.

1) Check that the screw fitting seals are not what is leaking.

2) remove the sunroof glass by unclipping the turn buckle and hinging the glass forwards out of the plastic slots. It is common that the metal curved part of the hinges rust and do not retract properly into their slots. This raises the front of the sun roof glass a little but and preventing a good seal.

Thanks geobloke

I’ve done that and cleaned the seal and the glass to ensure good glass to seal contact. I’ve also replaced the small gaskets on the head of the 2 feet that hold the glass in place at the front.

There’s a seal on eBay for £72 which I’m looking at. I just don’t want to strip the entire sunroof down only to find that it was a case of pulling out the old seal and pushing in the new one.

Good job Thumbs Up Ah ha just found that John has posted a thread about getting the seal out, here you go https://www.defender2.net/forum/post828599.html

Appears it is a prize out job not a complete sunroof removal job.

They don’t have drain tubes.

Water can also leak in between the outer frame and the roof skin - once the glass is removed the sunroof frame can be unscrewed and removed entirely, allowing the frame to be sealed to the roof skin. I did this in 2014 and along with a new glass to frame seal and it has been leak free ever since.

Land Rover’s permanent cure was to delete the sunroof option in later years.
