D300 engine failures?
Hi,

It seems as if there's a few D300s going kaput in ZA: https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/showt...ost5201811

I bought a 110 Defender D300 about 18 months ago. And to be honest one of the best vehicles that i have driven in my life.

Very good performance and ride comfort compared to lux saloons.

It started using oil at 28,000km. Took it to the dealer and left it with them. After bout a week they called to say the engine needs replacing. All under warranty, thank goodness.

The disappointment with this situation is just overwhelming. Before I bought the vehicle, a lot of research was done by myself on the vehicle. Nowhere did anyone mention of oil usage and engine replacements at low milage.

Now after the news, suddenly there are quite a few of them that had the same problem resulting in engine replacement. The guy working on the car in the dealership confessed that he had done about 6 last year. ...

I would think that for a new engine/car combination research on longevity would be limited.

Personally I am more into second hand cars, I find them more interesting and more to my taste. Its actually amazing how many cars there are were there are fundamental issues with the engine or the drivetrain to the point that this is priced in (unless you are an idiot). What's even more amazing is that most manufacturers do nothing about it, hoping to ride out the bad news.

Landrover had their fair share. I took the gamble and bought a Disco 4 with the notoriously crap TdV6 (ford) and sure enough it cratered on me and I had to write it off as a replacement engine was simply too expensive. I passed on the TDV8 (turbos issues) and the Td6 (L322-BMW - gearbox issues) and settled on a P38 4.0V8 with new liners etc. At least support for these engines is better.

Maybe the D300 is another one on the list?

Every manufacturer has an "engine failure" scare story.

Last week l was talking to someone whose 30,000 mile Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio lunched it's engine and apparently Alfa Romeo don't supply spares for this unit.

So he had to have a new engine. The bill? £45,000

Go on the internet and type any manufacturer followed by "engine failure"

FYI, the ZA vehicles don't have a DPF, and the service interval is 32,000km Shocked --
