Thanks for the advice. I get a genuine warm feeling when I can infer it’s fine for a bit.

All good removing the breather so no internal pressure, just need to park up with a lean to OSR corner and I’ll have the facts.

Otherwise it’s a search for parts on the way from Granada to Algeciras, or whatever Morocco has to offer. Everything's a hammer.

At the very least look to get the seals and lock nuts DHL'd out to you. Defo get them overnighted as spares. Did you pack a hub nut socket?


For reference it is a 52mm socket. IIRC a number of tractors use the same size so if you have not got one you should be able to find one in Spain.

Just as was relaxing into an occasional top up of gear oil, you've now rattled me.

Almost enough tools for a rebuild but certainly not a 52mm spanner. Everything's a hammer.

Do not worry too much and sorry I didn’t mean to rattle you. I am positive you will be able to find a 52mm socket or box spanner out in Spain. I suspect there might even be a Def2 forum member out there with one you can borrow. Worth asking…

Don’t rebuild whilst away. If you are desperate to do something, which it doesn’t seem you are, get a new cap for the end of the shaft / drive flange.

In truth I’m desperate to do nothing apart from top up fluid if necessary.

No issue sorting it when I get back, but right now it’s all a bit roadside. Everything's a hammer.

Santana uses/used the same hub arrangement so it is probably quite easy to find a 52mm box spanner (or the Santana special tool) in Spain if necessary.

Somewhere I have a note of the part number of the Santana tool, if I can find it I will post it here.

Update: found it, it is 161952.

Thanks all for your advice to date.

I’m still on the road with limited leakage overnight but otherwise all good.

Any thoughts on this (which comes highly recommended 😂) before I add some to the diff?
