swivel pin longevity difference from TD5 style to 300tdi
hi,

my 110 has a td5 front axle and swivel setup. with 35" tires i'm ruining the swivel bearings quite often.  if i convert to the 300tdi style pin setup will they last longer?

thanks! 04 110 TD5

See this thread for the different types of swivel housings.

From the years stated, it looks like the 300tdi was carried over to the TD5.

The earlier 200tdi used a Railko top bush, which feels pretty hefty to me. The 200tdi used a stronger CV with 23 splines, but a 10 spline diff. The stub axle is also longer so the wheel bearings are spaced further apart.

Would you be able to state how your swivel bearings are failing? Note that there are kits that come in a blue box, which are not up to standard. Go for quality bearing. I think OEM are Timken. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

hi,

i don't use the blue box stuff. i agree, not good! when we rebuild the pins and bearings we only end up with a couple thin shims left after preload is set. after a couple long overland trips the steering is lose and we don't have enough shims left to remove to get the preload right. the top bearing will be worn out.

we are wondering if we go back to the older style from 300tdi (which is different than on my td5) if it will last longer. we already converted the wheel bearings from the newer style to 300tdi style.

thank you 04 110 TD5

I put my non abs Puma back to the old style top pin and Timken bearing, far better design. Obviously cannot be swapped if ABS equipped.
