2.2 slightly thirstier. Comparing urban driving only. No motorways.
Comparing almost like with like, both 90s SW. Td5 on mud terrains, 2.2 on ATs. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black

I would think both very similar. Official figures may not be comparable, due to differing standards.

I’d guess the TD5 has the potential to be more thirsty and more frugal, depending on how it’s driven or if modded.

Eg

Two stock Disco 2’s manuals. But different model years. One would never do better than 26-28mpg the other would do 33mpg+ but never felt as pokey.

On a laning trip last year the Td5 in the group had worse mpg compared to the 2.2 Puma in the group. But it had slightly more aggressive tyres, roof rack and modded to 190hp. The 2.2 was factory standard including the tyres. But did have a larger intercooler.

Overall I’d suggest the 2 engines are likely always going to be 1-3mpg within each other. Certainly close enough for it to be a non issue.

Ave. MPG from my 2.2 tdci is between 27-32 mpg. Standard unmodded 2.2 with DPF & EGR, 110 Utlity with no mods (sound proofing or other heavy bits), standard Boost with Coni. CrossContact OEM size tyre.

I would think the MPG from a 2.4 or td5 would be better; there is no DPF regen cycle, which burns excess diesel to perforn a regen. So less ecomony is better for the environment? Zaid-M

Get better mpg from my td5 and a lot more smiles Laughing I was lucky to get 24 mpg from my 2.2.owned from new 2 years and 40k miles. I used fueley for the duration of ownership.
1st was a waste of time. The engine didn’t like to Rev like a td5, you short shift , and spend a lot of time with your foot planted on the floor. I had the stage 2 map supposedly the daddies, and the wife drove past me in the Td5 Rolling Eyes Average 28-36 in my Td5

Had a handful of 2.2s and never really got more than 24mpg.
My 130 TD5 returns 25mpg average and 27-30 on a run.
