Series III 109" Cost New
Afternoon,

I was wondering if anyone had any old price lists lying around.......

My insurance company here in France have asked how much my UK 1982 Series III 109" cost new as it does not exist in their database so they have to work out the rate manually.

Thanks,

David

Insurance companies are so stupid. They want to plonk all sorts of data in their algorithms.

So they want the price then or equivalent in today's money? They probably never thought about that. Why would they need to know that anyway, today's market value would be much more relevant

Mind you in France it's all still quit decent (cooperatives) TheUK insurance market is bonkers

Did you ever look at genuine Land-Rover 1/2 Ton parts prices when they were still available? The lower rear body was £4800 +VAT in the early 90's, the upper rear body side panels £1800 plus VAT each! The bonnet was over £3k obviously a case of think of a price and treble it.

I've got some parts lists for the military 2.5 NA 90/110's/FFRs, from when I was serving.

A crated up fully dressed 2.5 engine was in the region of £12500

That figure of £19,800 may be the amount of taxpayers' cash that the MoD paid for a Lightweight in 1985 but it is far from representative of the forecourt price of new Land-Rovers at the time.

I offer in evidence the photos below, which (for some reason) I took in 1982 on the forecourt of the Land-Rover main dealer in Reading (Dutton Foreshaw perhaps). The left vehicle was a brand new 88" Series III, I don't know the spec and cannot immediately account for unregistered one on the left costing more than the registered one on the right (which appears to be what was then the new "County" spec, identified by the jazzy side stripes and Lucas "Square 8" foglights, all cutting edge stuff at the time) but the RH one may be an ex-demonstrator and hence not quite new.

There you have an 88" Station Wagon, brand new, for a cash price £8205. This apparently has an equivalent purchasing power to £36,290.90 today, so very considerably less than anything from the JLR (or Ineos) stable today.

1982 was when Land-Rovers were still Land-Rovers, and Land-Rover drivers wore flannel trousers, Vyella shirts, and cloth caps, and wellies were still welcome in main dealers. Laughing

You could have had a brand new Ital for £3450, but you'd have to have been mad even then.....
