engine height
i have a problem with engine height. i am doing a chassis swap on a 300tdi 90. the chassis is a new galvanized one from richards the engine is from a 90 the gearbox is a discovery 300tdi automatic one new rubber mountings have been used . the problem i have is the front of the engine is sitting too low so the fan catches the cowling at the bottom.with the cowling on the radiator the fan cant be screwed on to the pulley as the thread is about an inch below where it needs to be.any ideas?

Do you have photos?

While it is possible there is something amiss with the chassis, it is unlikely as they will have been built on a jig.

Is the engine sitting at the right angle? Remember engine mounts only support the weight of the engine, location is also set by the gearbox mounting. The engine will essentially pivot or rock on its mounts moving the front of the engine up and down.

i have just measured the height of the mountings on the gearbox cross member the new one seems to be higher which would set the front lower. time to call richards chassis.

fitted the new gearbox cross member that sits the gearbox 10mm lower still cant fit the fan. next step was to measure another defender 300tdi . my engine is now in the correct place still the fan wont fit .it seems as if the wrong shroud has been fitted. now going to fit electric fan.

i am fitting an electric fan today. it seems that i as trying to cure to problems at once without realizing that i had two problems. the problems were the engine sitting too low on the mounts this has been cured with the help of richards chassis by fitting spacers. the second problem was the wrong fan shroud. measuring another car proved my engine is now in the correct place. this car that i am rebuilding was bought as a running pile of parts.

I think the problem is the chassis is wrong, that’s why the fan cowl doesn’t fit now. I would be getting the chassis replaced if it’s wrong, not accepting shims Shocked
