Scotland 2012 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 SW Orkney Grey
My high speed stopped working and I replaced the motor. All fixed. For around £110 you can get a complete OEM motor with new parking switch, gears and drive coil. It takes less than an hour to change it including lubricating the spindles while you have it out.

Blackwolfs thread explains it well. Tip from me is to just loosen the inner bolt on the bracket holding to motor to the bulkhead rather than remove it as very limited hand space to get it back in.

It can be done a lot quicker than that after you've don't it the first time, perhaps 30 mins with practice.

You could check for a steady battery voltage appearing on Pin 1 of connector C0303, the wiper delay ECU (what many people incorrectly call the relay) socket when intermittent wipe is selected. If this is present, the switch is probably OK.

The easiest way to check the delay ECU is to replace it with a known good one from another vehicle (or fit it to another vehicle). If you remove the wiper delay ECU and link receptacles 2 and 5 in the socket (C0303 again) the wipers should work as conventional old-fashioned two speed wipers with no intermittent and no wipe-on-squirt feature.

Incidentally, does the wipe-on-squirt feature work as it should?

Generally the wiper delay ECU is quite reliable, they don't fail often.

Thanks. I removed the relay and cleaned the contacts and now the intermittent feature works as it should. I can hear and feel the relay clicking. Suspect it was the relay at fault, or its housing, for that issue. Perhaps it bumped out of its housing yesterday (was on a bumpy forestry road). Anyway, seems likely to be a relay issue on the intermittent. If relay in the way out they are quick and easy to replace so that’s OK. I don’t think my wipe on spray feature works though. Pretty sure it sprays only but with no wipe on push (have to wipe using normal up/down control). What does the lack of wash wipe on push suggest? (I can’t check because I’ve just sealed all the front joint with spray sealer to try and solve a footwell leak Very Happy )

Loss of wipe-on-squirt suggests a poor contact on pin 6 of C0303, however I took the decision to disable this pin on the "relay" anyway since the wipers always started too soon, long before there was enough water on the screen. I prefer to squirt first then turn the wipers on manually.

It's very easy to bend the pin on the "relay" 90 degrees outwards so that it doesn't enter the socket, and a worthy mod in my opinion. That and fitting a "99" relay and the wipers are transformed over stock.

Just checked and wipe on squirt is working. What’s a 99 relay? Will prob fit a new relay anyway.

The VW 99 "relay" is completely pin-compatible with the standard LR one but gives you variable intermittent wipe, instead of the fixed interval of the standard. They're widely available (eg eBay) and generally quite inexpensive.

To operate, you flick the switch to intermittent then back to off, then after the delay you want, switch to intermittent and leave the switch there. The interval is then set. Very convenient.

Probably the best cheap upgrade you can do to a Defender.

What a brilliant mod the 99 relay is. Use it more often than either of the two constantly on positions. You can also use the 99 relay in the rear window wiper relay position as well.
