Steering Wheel Question
Good day All,

Apologies if this has been asked and yes, I did try using search but did not find a clear answer.

Would a steering wheel, 48 spline, from a 15 reg or newer that has ESP work on a Defender that takes a 48 spline but doesn't have ESP. As I understand it there is a clip of sorts on steering wheels that have ESP but what isn't clear is if it hinders being used on one without.

Many thanks!

P

I thought this was nonsense, but in fact there is the steering angle sensor which is moved by a grey ring (see picture) and the hub moves the grey ring. Picture from BlackLandy

The DSC wheels (15MY+) can't be used on earlier ones as there's nowhere to clip the cancelling ring to.

The 'clip' is on the non DSC wheels, there is no clip on the DSC ones.

The DSC wheels are flush on the back with slots for the pegs on the steering angle sensor/indicator cancelling to locate into.

The non DSC wheels have a collar on the back which the sprung cancelling 'prong' sleeve clip thingy grips onto.

There are photos about on the forum of the two setups.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

When I say "it won't fit" - it will fit as the splines are correct (assuming 48 spline column).

The DSC wheels are missing the cancelling pegs. You could make/have made a piece to fit to a DSC wheel in order to cancel the earlier setup.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I think I get it now.

I have a lead on a steering wheel I want to order for a Defender I don't have hehe. I am aiming for a 64 reg or up, which has DSC, but was hoping it could fit one without DSC in case something comes up for sale without it.

Perhaps best to wait until I get a 90 before buying parts! Smile
