Aux Heater into TDCI
Hello.

I have just recently fitted a Webasto diesel heater to my tdci 110. I thought I would add this post as it may be of interest to some of you who are thinking of adding one. I know this has been covered before, but this is what and how I did it.

The heater in a tdci is brilliant, but I have added it for rapid defrosting along with it being a useful addition to the vehicle. Sitting waiting to pick the kids up and the likes!

I had seen various ways of installing, but I wanted minimal impact on the vehicle if it were to be removed.

I did not want to remove the fuel tank to fit the prob or have a tank inside of the cabin. I opted for a Mud UK Nakatanenga pipe pick up and one of their boxes to install the heater under the cubby box.

I opted for a Webasto diesel air heater instead of a Chinese one. They are more expensive, but serviceable and very reliable.

I was able to mount the air intake and the fuel pump in the battery box under the passenger seat. It isn’t airtight but will keep them from the weather and harsh environment of the chassis.

The kit was supplied by Cumbria Auto Electrical at Carlisle. It was cheaper than the internet and you have somewhere to to knock on the door if you have any issues. The only thing I had to add was conduit for the fuel and electrical harnesses.

The will make a deflector plate to add some extra protection to the fuel lift pipe and install the sender into the tank in the future of the tank has to come off. The Mud Stuff sender works well. I curled the end so it wasn’t on the bottom of the tank. It stops picking up just before the fuel light comes on!

Mine lives under the rear seat in the 110, (td5). blows out warm air from under the rear middle seat. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I notice your fuel pump is mounted level. My instructions say must be at an angle.

15-90 deg up at output side. It is after final nip up. Was a photo take as went on and how clean hands were. Not final position.

It has a 45 degree output pointing up. Kit came with a straight and 45. Heat rises, but wouldn’t want it stirring dust up.

Very quiet. I am use to them on trucks, but almost silent and no smoke on start up.

Ian and Gary are good folk there. I worked there for a while before moving to my current role. Would still be there if this opportunity hadn't popped up!

I was contemplating getting a thermotop and putting it into my coolant lines to heat the engine up and thus the in cabin air as well but still never got round to it!

Where/how are people installing the Nak/mudstuff fuel takeoff pipe?

Anywhere on fuel inlet pipe, high as possible/low as possible ?

No instructions with it.

I took the filler pipe off and cut it half way on the part that is horizontal just before entering the tank. Wasn’t happy with how the end would be in the tank, so I curled the very end up with long nose pliers so it couldn’t stab or suck up from the vey bottom of the tank. I fitted it tank side and felt the pipe for resistance. It was going to waddle about, so removed it and manipulated the pipe so it would clear filler hole and go straight down to the bottom. (End curled up)

The heater stopped just as the fuel light came on. Happy with that.

Once happy, I put all fitted the rest of the filler pipe and nipped up.

I put a 90 elbow with the feed for the heater down and back to make sure there was no leverage on anything. The fuel pipe in conduit then follows the 110’s fuel pipes up to the heater.

Hope this helps.

I will add a deflector plat to sit in front of the pipe as a bit of extra protection.
