R380 Gearbox question
While I finished my Defender rebuild and waiting for MOT, I figured it makes sense to clean the Gearbox and transfer case and replenish the oils.
with the R380, I noted that there was also old gunked up oil under/in the gear change housing. I did however not see any inlet or outlet where the oil could circulate.

is it correct that with the refill I should also replenish that area or will it be automatically lubricated? The gearbox manual does not make any statement on this (or I just did not see it ...)

Hi, I’m not sure I fully understand your problem/question.

The transfer box and main gearbox are separate and require different oils.

Both should have a drain and fill plug.

You can use the fill plug hole to check levels and/or you can drain and refill using the correct measurement.

I’m interpreting that you have a leak around the transmission area so I would clean the area up and top up both boxes and see if you can identify the source of the leak.

I suspect you are referring to oil in the selector housing on top of the gearbox (item 16 here: https://www.lrworkshop.com/diagrams/land-r...er_53550)?

I have seen this previously myself, there shouldn't actually be any oil in there, just a smear of grease.

It probably means that the o-ring on the selector shaft (item 12 here: https://www.lrworkshop.com/diagrams/land-r...fts_53557) could do with replacing but also worth confirming that the gearbox breather is not blocked causing pressure to be forced up through the shifter.

Oil sat in there wont be doing any real harm though unless it increases in level and starts to overflow.

Hi all,

Thabks Steve, I indeed was referring to that area. Got late and i did not take any pics of the spot…now i cleaned it up and will grease it up again.smelled like rotten eggs that further went bad … Somewhat reluctant to crack ip up any further as in spring i’ll replace the whole unit with a winchester unit …

But i was surprised to find any “oil” there as it did not have the sign of inlet or outlet in this space Td5 110 Station
