300TDi EGR / non EGR performance disparity
Hello,
I had two identical 110 County station wagons (the '96 now sold):
1996, 300TDi non EGR, 300,000 miles and no modifications to the engine save an improved turbocharger CHRA (link at the bottom).

1998 300TDi EGR, 140,000 miles and no modifications to the engine save an improved turbocharger CHRA (link at the bottom) and an Allisport uprated intercooler.

The '96 would easily hold an indicated 70 up the Lickey hill on the M42, the '98 will not.
Both return the same fuel consumption so I'm pretty sure it's not injector pump settings. Note that the "improved" intercooler made little difference to the '98

The only thing I can attribute this to is the catalyst in the exhaust of the '98 but I can't remove that.

This makes me think the next step would be to fit a VGT to increase boost at lower engine speeds thus reducing the amount of torque droop as the engine speed reduces. Thoughts?

Presumably the gear ratios, transfer box ratios and tyre sizes were the same?

The EGR only works at idle, overrun and low loads so should not make a difference at load unless it is faulty. The Cat can cause back pressure if partially blocked. Not sure how the cat works on a 300tdi but on a Td5 is in the exhaust down pipe and can be inspected.

Given the age of both vehicles, is it not possible one engine is a bit more tired than the other..? Less compression etc?

Yes, identical tyre sizes with the one set being swapped from the '96 to the '98

Identical R380 transmission and 1.4: transfer box
Identical boost pressures
The 300,000 mile vehicle performed better than the 140,000 mile one

EGR (it's blanked) isn't the problem; I think it's the catalyst restricting gas flow causing the compressor (and boost) to drop off sharply.

The condition of the engine is not only based on miles.. Did you check the intake track post EGR for restrictions (soot)? Not sure when the EGR was blanked. Cat, maybe you can drop an endoscope in there to inspect?

On the '98 when the Turbocharger was replaced the inlet manifold was removed and cleaned as were the hoses, pipes and intercooler.

For the catalyst if it were partially blocked how would I clean it?

Over the years it has been my experience that engines, particular Land Rover Tdi and Td5 untis do run differently. Some go a lot better than others. And often the ones that don't go as well, also don't respond to mods the same either.

I have removed Cats on diesels, and they have responded well, the 306 HDI, the turbo spools better, and so did my 300 TDI, the EGRs were blanked off, did very little difference. But my 300 TDI had a bodged EGR pipe, which made it under powered. got a blanking kit and binned the full nosh, What a difference that made, but then again, all i did was replace a bodged pipe on the EGR system and it was happy, but binned it all anyway, with the EGR. As its one less of a nightmare to deal with. Done the same thing with the TD5 and the 306. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
