Thanks Julie, I've only just seen this post - that's really useful.
I wish my French was better, (same applies to the Vibraction books) but I guess I'll get the gist. 
Edit - and I've just found what must be a 'sister site' with an English version! I can get some sense out of the French one but this is a lot easier on the grey matter! Last September a mate and I did the "Route des Cols" on a motorcycle tour. The Pyrenees section starts about 45 seconds in, and sadly only lasts a few minutes,
The Route des Cols takes you over all the main, high "cols" between the Atlantic and the Med. Whilst not directly (maybe) of use to you, the Route des Cols was a stunning route The part of the vid about 50-seconds in takes you over one of the stunning cols...then onto a "balcony road"... it was fabulous! The Route Des Cols is mostly signed (however don't rely on the signs, they're not all there...or easily missed!), and there's a GPX route available if you want... Thanks Martin - I'm not a biker, but that looks like a fabulous trip. Whetting my appetite a little!
I think there's a 'Cols' route in the road book I linked to above, and the video gives a flavour of that. As I've said above, we have the Vibraction route 5 plotted and at this stage I guess it would represent the 'spine' of our trip, but if any circumstances (environment, personal, mechanical) get in the way I'll not get too excited and will just wander about as we can. It'll still be there next year. It's been, and continues to be a difficult year so I'm just about desperate to get away now! Mark... My vid above was September... Weather was great. Chilly at night when camping. Cool on the tops of the cols (3000 metres/ 10000 feet). Warm during the day tho Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

I’ve been across the Pyrenees both in the spring and autumn and both have their own joys. May is beautiful with flowers etc and spring meadows. Also nice and quiet with campsites only recently opening. Autumn is equally beautiful, the colours in the mountains are gob smacking especially around the Ordesa park area. You will always take a degree of risk with the weather so nothing is guaranteed. Having done one trip in August which was great, just quite hot and more busy. My favourite would always be Spring or start of Autumn depending on mood. |

Thanks. It looks pretty amazing really. One of the gravel road trips I did on a Bonneville, there was frost in August. September would be spectacular I guess, especially as I love autumn.

Click image to enlarge We're actually out in the Pyrenees at the moment. We've gone west to east from Bilbao, largely on the French side. We're currently on the coast between Perpignon and the Spanish border. There are come good trails up on the Canigou Massif that are Defender friendly. Last week we were north of Andorra in the Foix/St Girons area - again some good tracks - but some quite narrow and fitted with only one line of choice. We didn't get the tyres too dirty as we have the MTBs for that! I actually like the Western side better- especially as you drop down to somewhere like Haro on the Rioja and, as has been previously mentioned, the 'Spaghetti Western bits East of Burgos. We're South of Perpignon all the next week and then back in Occitane for 3 nights the following week. If you are close then feel free to say 'hello'! |
