Up-rated clutch on VNT
I’m fitting a Turbo Technics turbo/larger intercooler during the rebuild of my td5, while the engine and box are out I’m going to fit a new clutch.

Looking for real life tested opinions on clutch-fix or LOF from anyone who has them fitted along with the VNT turbo and larger intercooler. I’d rather keep the Dual mass, on other vehicles they’re a bit horrible/harsh when removed I’ve found.

Where’d you get the Clutchfix from? I’ve got the IRB/Bells VNT turbo, allisport intercooler.

Youll blow the DMF with any real power.

Lukes SMF is properly balanced and set up for the TD5 unlike previous offerings.

So I would suggest the VNT Extreme kit. Had the same on my old 110 which was a daily, my D2 and will be in my new 110 again. Instagram @defender_ventures

Laughing Errrr no you won’t….

There’s someone on here has ran Ian’s turbo for a number of years using a standard valeo and dmf.

^^^^ as had I....

IRB 190bhp tune with VNT turbo (boost box and allisport intercooler)

running 235/85's with a 1.2:1 transfer box, so already "higher" geared (meaning more revs to pull away and with that gearing was like pulling away in 2nd instead of 1st)

82k odd miles. standard clutch. no problem. OK did change the DMF a few years back as the springs went, but don't they all?

clutch held up just fine, and I never hung around when driving it.

2004 Defender 110 Td5 DCPU Epsom Green
230hp, 530nm of torque, dyno proven and that was with a stock airbox and a slight leak from the intercooler. After those issues where rectified we suspected around 10 - 15% more but sadly never got to dyno it again.

Blew the dmf pretty quickly on the motorway. Had covered maybe 10k miles before hand and maybe 2k after the VNT.

Was on 33s with a 1.3 TX box and 3 ATBs.

Which is why I said real power. Whistle Also why Luke developed the SMF because people like me kept blowing Valeo DMFs, however the friction plates where always fine! Instagram @defender_ventures

Must be the way you drove it then banks Whistle in 40k never had an issue …… oh the 180k gearbox went bang Rolling Eyes
The IRB/ bell turbo technics vnt was the first……. Very drivable but isn’t fair to compare it with the latest batch of vnts as the development stopped some years ago. IIRC there was 2 versions?

Yes there’s a specked up “race” version and a VNT in the turbo technics line up. We don’t have as much choice as you lot on the mainland (some amazing fabricators and rally oriented builders) so have to take a chance with a lot of this stuff and I know it’s a good old dung flinging match like any trade Whistle

I have a Turbo Technics VNT, allisport intercooler, allisport hoses, I will probably weld up a few hoses and intake hoses to replace the plastic fantastic restricted set-up. Why’d I choose that set-up? Because I love a good deal and got it second hand out of a crashed Defender Mr. Green


I’m fitting an updated clutch because it’s already getting replaced when it’s out, I do tow a bit at 3.5 ton and I’d like a bit of longevity in the setup. I won’t be running maxed out full boost boy racer, just reliable power across the range.

Normally would totally agree but went bang cruising at 80ish round the 25! Far as we could work out was the torque being sent though. Instagram @defender_ventures

Another vote for the LOF extreme spec clutch and SMF kit.

I’ve been running it in my Td5 with a CR Turbos VNT for nearly two years now. Absolutely no complaints to date. Charlie

I had a Clutchfix clutch installed in a previous Puma Defender , was rattling after a couple of weeks, clutch was faulty and replaced under warranty but I still had to cough up for the labour cost of replacing it. Confused

The Td5 110 runs a Lof clutch and Lof solid flywheel last 3 years and no issues !!


Current puma 110 bought recently needs a clutch and I'll likely be going LOF again Whistle
