Wiper set up
So. After a bit of tinkering I think I’ve found a good wiper mod / setup. I know this has been done a few times before but I don’t think exactly in this form - so this might be of use to someone … it’s not the most elegant but it’s really practical.

So what I did was …

A) put a 2 way splitter on the washer feed/ hose.
B) put spray nozzles (2 spray) cable tied to each wiper arm
C) replaced the wiper arms with Toyota Argo rear wipers 13” (plastic so no corrosion etc..)
D) replaced the driver side blade with a 14” universal blade.

I can now get almost a full clear screen and I estimate cost under £20.

I think with some adjustment I can get the passenger side to take 14” which will make it look much neater and give me an even better wipe. Then I will sort out the hoses so they are neater.

Thanks for sharing this! I have improving my wipers on the to do list so this is very interesting.

I already fitted the Optimill 6 jet washer which is pretty good, but my wiper arms have never really done a good job even with new blades.

Are the Toyota arms easy to fit or did you have to modify anything?

Can the wiper arms be seated so they rest a bit closer to the base of the windscreen?

I'm very tempted to do this mod, so please share any updates if you manage to get a longer blade on the passenger side etc TD5 hardtop to Puma inspired Poptop - my build thread

The Toyota arms are very easy to fit (mine is puma) Just unscrew the nut on the original arm, pull
Off the old one and press on new ones and put nut back on.

I’m going to put the 14” on the passenger side today so will report back. I think it will fit, I may just have to adjust the starting position of the wiper arm.

The only issue I have encountered is the original Toyota blade seems better than the 14” but it might just need some tweaking.

Looking forward to hearing how it goes!

Bosch Aerotwin blades seem to have a lot of good reviews from defender owners so I might try them when I replace the wiper arms.. TD5 hardtop to Puma inspired Poptop - my build thread

14” works well on both sides. Let me know how you get on. Only thing I’d say is I don’t know if the Bosch fit the Argo wipers but my aftermarket universals wipe well now with a bit of tweaking and especially with the washer jets attached.

And here is the photo with 2x14” wipers on the Toyota arms for anyone who’d like to see the wipe area. Washer jets are cable tied to the arms.

Looks great! What did you have to do to get the 14" blades to fit?

I ordered my wiper arms today so will fit the next weekend TD5 hardtop to Puma inspired Poptop - my build thread

Nothing radical. Just had to make sure the start and end position had enough clearance. When I first fitted the new arms I put them too flat (or too horizontal). because of the curve you can get them quite horizontal but then they don’t wipe quite enough - if that makes. Hope they work well for you. It’s a simple and good mod that actually makes me want to drive in the rain!

Got my wiper arms fitted (Toyota Aygo, same as yours) and they look so much better than the originals.

Need to get new blades as the ones that came with the arms are only 12"

Do you have the same clip fitting on yours as this?

I'm looking at various websites to try to find Bosch blades that have adaptors for this type of fitting but I can't find any - what 14" blades did you use? TD5 hardtop to Puma inspired Poptop - my build thread

Hi. I bought ‘universal’ blades from my local general auto shop. I’ll try to see if I can find the packaging but most universal blade come with a variety of fixings and one of those will be the small one you need.

I've finished the upgrade having managed to find some Michelin 14" wiper blades that fitted and it works a treat.

The only slight thing is there's a small section in the middle of the screen where the wipers dont reach, but if I adjust the passenger side wiper to swipe "further left" over the drivers side, the botom end of the wiper fouls the botton seal of the windscreen. You can just see this in the 2nd pic below.

This doesn't make any real difference to visibiity and there's a much bigger area of the screen that gets wiped now.

Thanks for sharing your idea, that's what I love about this forum!

That looks really smart! And thanks for the tip on the wiper blades I’ll check those out.

Glad this worked out for you.
