United Kingdom 2002 Defender 110 Td5 DCPU Keswick Green
[SOLD] Penman GS Cargo Trailer
Evening all,

As I am shortly moving house and losing my storage/driveway, I am sadly having to sell my Penman. I bought it a couple of years ago from a member on here. Since buying it I have done the following:

- Freed up the jockey wheel pivot mechanism,
- Fitted a breakaway cable and jockeywheel locking clip,
- Fitted new Bradley jockey wheel knob,
- Removed both hubs, stripped, cleaned and fully regreased the wheel bearings amd fitted new SKF hub seals,
- Fitted New EBC brake pads,
- Converted to civilian spec 12v electrics. This in involved swapping all bulbs to 12v versions and fitting a new 12N 7pin towing plug and suzie cable. To correctly wire this back to the original junction box under the chassis I also removed all of the potting compound from within.
- Fitted one brand new genuine marker light to the front,
- Fitted new tailgate buffers to the crossmember,
- Fitted new clamps to the drawbar bellows and regreased.

The trailer is in good, straight condition with only a couple of minor dings on the tub. As you may know, the tubs on these are stainless steel so no rust worries like the older Sankey versions. Paintwork on it is very poor white UN livery over the original. I had planned on repaining back in olive drab. Tyres are both good Michelin XZLs on the original wolf wheels.

It currently has the convoy light assembly removed (included) and the light fitted to the rear crossmember as a reversing light. The rear towing jaw is also removed and has been sand blasted for painting. It comes with a decent condition cover Nd I also have a pair of new take-off mudguards in the original dark green to avoid having to remove the paint off the fitted ones which i would include for the right price.

Have towed this a good few miles with a range of weight in it and it tows really nicely behind both my V8 90 and 110. Its currently stored in my workshop in the Hope Valley

Now, forgive my ignorance but is there a way to change the front hitch to a standard one that fits on a ball? Or is there a reason for not doing that?
Could be interested… 👍

Thanks,

It's much easier to change your towing hitch, you can mount a nato jaw on a dixon bate plate or go for a 2 inch receiver and have both a ball hitch and a nato jaw when you need them.

Cheers Camelman. I’d be towing with my G4 110 that has the NAS rear step so ideally would like to keep the car as is and adapt the trailer. Just wondered if there was some load/mechanical reason why the trailer wouldn’t be converted 👍

**Edit** just noticed the braking mechanism on the hitch, that makes sense now. 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled.

The Penman is a relatively heavy trailer (620kg empty) so needs an effective braking system.
A few people have converted them but usually to drop the height of the towing ring to underneath the frame to try and get it to sit more level, especially if towing with a vehicle with a low tow bar.
The towing ring / rotating nato hitch combination allows for a high degree of rotation of the trailer vs towing vehicle when off road
