France/Spain Pyrenees - Camping in the school hols
We are thinking of re-running our traverse of the Pyrenees (Vibraction Road Book 5) that we did a few years ago. Last time we made no bookings for camping in advance, just turned up at sites we fancied along the way with no issues. However, that was outside school holiday season. This time we will be restricted to school hols. Anyone done it in the late July/Early August period? Are we likely to have trouble getting on sites if we just turn-up? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Great trip I am very envious Thumbs Up Yes book ahead I would advise. And, there is a fabulous campsite in Gavin that often has the most fabulous Nightingales singing. Confused the heck out of me the first nigh, but absolutely marvellous spectacle.

That’s a shame, It puts me off a bit having to book ahead as we don’t tend to plan ahead where we will be. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

That would be my preference, but not if we are going to struggle to get in places. Late May into June was no problem, but that outside holiday season. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I done the same route last year and did have trouble with trying to get into some sites, as long as you have good reception on your phone to look for alternatives there always one near by. 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8

Last August

We ventured to Chamonix for a few days which was very difficult to find a camp site with availability.
Then traveled down to Barcelona for a week stoping at Ardeche on route.
Then the fun began with RB5 traverse.
Outside of the Pyrenees we always try to stay Hutopia sites which are excellent.
For peace of mind when I venture back I will probably book ahead during peak times. 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8

Get your other half to book up but not tell you … then they can navigate you to the site and as is by magic they will have space! 😉

were not long back from a similar trip.

lots of campsites closed, quite a few forever as well due to low trafic numbers etc. we had plenty of good ones but a few poor ones as well but little choice as there are less around.

i would prebook a few if possible

wild camping is illegal in many places and most national parks in spain and other eu countries.

if they catch you its big fines.

and yet they do patrol. we met customs on top of the smugglers pass in andorra this year

plus a lot of tracks are closed for fire risk or repair.

I don't mind it for the odd night, but ensuring access to a shower and flushing toilet keeps things harmonious and relaxed.

My understanding in spain is that it's not allwed in the NPs, but fine elsewhere, many people do risk it. The trouble for us is having a ground tent means it's not a very discreet set-up. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS
