United Kingdom 1986 Defender 130 V8 Petrol HCPU Aintree Green
[Wanted] A Defender 110/130 USW, DC or Hardtop (Commercial)
I'm looking to buy a vehicle for my business, and for various reasons it will need to be classified as a "van" by the DVLA. Logic would dictate that I buy an actual van, but I'm comfortable with the quirks of Defenders, and the ability to tow 3500kg etc is handy.

Whilst my knowledge of Land Rovers is reasonably comprehensive, classifications for tax purposes are new to me. My understanding is that it will need to have a payload in excess of 1000kg, and be "A vehicle primarily constructed for the conveyance of goods or burden of any description".

Update

Following some further reading, and consideration I have narrowed my search down to the following, in order of preference:

1. 110 USW
2. 110 Hardtop
3. 130 DC
4. 110 DC
5. 110 Pick up / Hi-Cap

Since the USW was only introduced post 2007, I am principally looking at Pumas (logically 2.2s for the reduced N1 tax class). However, I would consider any age or spec hardtop or DC within reason providing it that it meets the following criteria:

- Can be classed as a van as per the above.
- Excellent condition, both mechanically and cosmetically i.e. not a project.

The following would be nice, but are not deal-breakers:

- Electric windows
- Air con
- Roll cage
- Galvanised chassis, bulkhead etc.

Let me know if you think you have something that may be of interest. TIA. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

I'm not comfortable that a USW meets the van criteria as HMRC say it must not have windows/seats behind the driver's but others will disagree, so make sure you satisfy yourself. Rob

Good point, if I'm not mistaken, a USW would need to be classed as N1 for it to be considered a van. I think that came in for MY2010 but could be wrong? 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

A factory-built USW should be classed as N1 irrespective of age, but being classed as N1 does not guarantee for any vehicle that it will meet the HMRC's very particular criteria for commercial status.

HMRC seems to make up the rules as it goes along on a day-by-day basis.

I don't think that there were ever any factory-built USWs prior to the introduction of the TDCi, so you won't find a TD5 or 300TDi factory USW.

Thanks Blackwolf. It sounds like a 110 Hardtop/Pickup or Hi-Cap might be the best then, difficult to argue that they are anything but "constructed for the conveyance of goods or burden of any description" when there are no rear seats/doors I would hope? 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

That doesn't look a bad buy if you can stomach the ghastly chequer-plate, but I am puzzled that someone's managed a "DPF delete" on a 58 plate 2.4 which never had a DPF in the first place! I guess the vendor means "decat" but is confused by the difference between a DPF and a cat.

I believe that all of the variants you list, which are the "commercial" variants, are N1 with the 2.4 engine, (certainly my 2007 110 DC is) and that only the station wagons (non-USW) were M1.

Edited for typo - a 1.4 litre Defender would be disappointing, I meant, of course, 2.4 litre. Now corrected.

My 2008 USW is M1. I have the original order booking bill and it states Utility Station Wagon.
It all seems a bit of a minefield. 2008 2.4 110 Utility XS.

Interesting, perhaps then it was just the HT and DC that were N1.
