Wing Top Chequer - Foam Gasket?
Morning All,

I am planning on installing some wing top chequer plates to my car with rivnuts to cover up the dented panels and give the added protection.

Question though, I have seen that there are foam gaskets available from the usual places - are they needed?

I was planning on claying and then protecting the dented wing tops with a ceramic coating and being secured with rivnuts, I will then be able to remove them if needed.

Wanted to get peoples thoughts on the foam gaskets, those for and those against....

Actually, I might have asked a totally pointless question here.

I guess that because I am using Rivnuts to install the plates that I can decide if I want the foam gaskets at a later date because I can easily remove the plates!

Doh. I should not be allowed near the internet before I have fully woken up.

Without a foam gasket crud still gets underneath the wing top protectors.

You can buy a sheets of adhesive back neoprene from eBay/ Amazon and then stick in to the underside of the protector then cut to fit with a fresh Stanley blade.

I suppose some thin draft excluder around the edge of the underneath of the wing top might be a good idea to prevent the crud.

I would not put a foam gasket under the whole panel, as due to the large surface area you would need a lot of force to compress, and most likely you would just pull the aluminum around the rivnuts upwards. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Thanks for all your replies!

With them being a bit stoved in, I'm not quite sure what to do. I've ordered up a set of the foam gaskets, so I am just going to try and pull some of the dents out and to at least make the panel a little straighter and then rivnut the plates on and leave it a few days, remove and see what they're like underneath, then make a call on them.

I guess there is no harm in putting them on is there.

Since you place aluminium on aluminium you should have little galvanic effect. Unless you see a lot of road salt or other agressive fluids I don't think you will see any excessive corrosion between the the two plates.

I would not put anything in between

My wing top checker plates are pop riveted on and nothing between them Thumbs Up

I'm not a fan of rivnuts at all Censored 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.
