Morning all,
Looking at getting the spare wheel mounted on the rear. I have a drop down tailgate and was wondering what (if any) spare wheel carriers you guys with tubs have and use? I know the Mantec carrier attaches to the rear door and moves with it, I’m wondering if this can be adapted for the tailgate. Any thoughts, photos etc? Thanks Mark. Great photo as I’m having a HD stick set made for me that will look almost identical to those, so the tyre on the back does give a go idea of the finished look. Only comment on that actual set up is how many bars are showing. I’d prefer the Mantec if at all possible as the bar is hidden away. Thanks.

The carrier was designed by Sonic3d on this forum and was made in conjunction with Alisport. The Nakatengenawhatsitcalled carrier has to be the best but the price
Ore4x4 do a great stainless but seems to only fit hinge doors. I wonder if it's worth asking if they have options. I'm borderline certain that ORE are developing a wheel carrier for pickups. Only reason I remember is because I asked if they'd also be doing one for the 110/130 HCPUs... in which they said no

I’m still working out the best way to do my dcpu, i don’t think i could be arsed with a swing away with a drop down tail gate, esp given how much i drive round the farm with fence posts out the back and use the tail gate, it’s a great platform for knocking in high fence posts.
The internal mount isnt great as it limits the bead space, im tempted to see if i can mount it up on the side of the tub |

I put the Safari Equip version on mine, then took it off again after a couple of months!
It does the job fine...I added a clip to the drop catch as it rattled loose and opened one day, which was interesting! I just found it a pain to have to open the carrier then the tailgate. I also have a lid on mine so it's just much more user friendly without the carrier. I have made a half platform in the bed to allow a tray to fit under it and the spare sits on top of the shelf which still gives a useable space too. If I need more room I take the wheel and shelf out and throw the spare on the roof rack. Cheers Al |

Much better to convert tailgate to swing open, then fit regular carrier- it is a real faff to have to do both catches etc…

That’s veeeeery nice Al. Seriously considering doing this. I do use the tail gate a lot, but am thinking of getting a fully lockable draw for my new job, so did think I might go the side opening option as the draw could on occasion do the tail gate’s job.
I don’t actually drive with a spare locally, only on long journeys and I just chuck it under the tonneau. But obviously if I got a draw, level with the two wheel arches, I could get a spare wheel strap and keep it in the rear, flat on top. So the reason for the spare wheel is less about space, but mainly to allow me to mount a Fabbri ski carrier on the rear. The season lasts 20 odd weeks, so for almost a third of the year we’re currently chucking skis in the back, but I’m looking to do it in a slightly more efficient way. Mind you, I do like the way they’ve mounted the ski holders to the roll cage in the photo below. I’m having a HD stick set made for my hood, so maybe this is an option…. I have the Allisport carrier on my DCPU. It replaced the safari equip which was very flimsy in comparison.
It’s wonderfully engineered and I think rather good looking ! I will agree with others though in that it’s a faff if using your tailgate a lot. I don’t have a back on at present so that’s not a problem ! I bought it secondhand on fleabane for circa £150 mint . May be worth setting an alert ! Thanks for the thoughts on build quality of the Safari Equip. I did wonder, when you look at the price. My issue with the Allisport is all the metal sticking out either side of the wheel. A bit busy. Prefer the tidier looks of the Mantec, Masai and Naks. The Naks looks amazing, but at 900€ is a tad (read massively) expensive. I have the Safari Equip carrier on my DCPU and don't consider it flimsy at all - and my other LRs are military. It's a well made, study piece of kit that will last a long time provided you opt for one of the galvanised versions. Neither do I find it inconvenient to open an anti-luce catch for access it because it is one of the 2 that hold the tailgate up anyway. A small padlock through the lower part of anti-luce will prevent it from jiggling open on rough terrain.
For the ~£200 price I consider it a cost-effective solution to the lack of space in the back of a DCPU. |
