Switzerland 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SVX Station Wagon Santorini Black
From experience, yes there definitely is a world of difference between supermarket Diesel and Premium Diesel. I have run the first years continuously on (French) supermarket diesel, and the engine was quite noisy, as well as the EGR valve cleaning cycle after switching off. I did not know better than that was normal then....
I had followed a thread on Def2.net here about those in favor of BP Ultimate, and those who call the fact that there would be a difference fairy tales. I initially was on the fairy tales side.....
Until I tried BP Ultimate now more than a year ago. Indeed a world of difference, immediately the engine sound became less clatter, much milder, and quickly the EGR cleaning cycle became a much gentler chukka chukka chukka... I never looked back, and as I cannot find any BP stations in France anywhere close to the border, I now use nothing else anymore than our local Swiss BP Ultimate. I pay the premium, maybe there even is a mpg improvement, although have not measured that. One more thing which is not bad, but I don't know if it applies to all EU countries, here in Switzerland BP Ultimate diesel is 100% mineral diesel, so no bio-diesel at all. Definitely a pro too.
Also take a look at the below thread which is specifically on this topic.

Even more expensive on a Puma with aircon is the fact, that the lifting eye hammers on an a aircon tube in case one out of two screews is missing (as in my case).
I simply removed it completely before an expensive tube replacement to be happen.

now that you've resurrected this thread 1ten neus I have just realised that its nearly two years and my engine sounds exactly the same as in the first post. Its going to the (highly recommended ) James French guys in Oxford in July for a plug-in but it goes well so maybe its just one of those things. I could never find the red engine eye though !

rossy,

not sure if this will be any help to you but I had (still have to a much smaller extent a similar sound), since new the following has been done

replaced g'box
replace t'box input shaft
run on 2so
have injector learn carried out
adjusted hand brake
cleaned maf and map sensors
tightend loose heat shield and heat shield support off manifold

my gut feeling is there are issues with the egr (contrary to what has been suggested) so I'm looking to replace this.

engine runs really well compared to how things have been and I'm a great fan of the 2so using 1/3 ltr each fill up.

hope you get to the bottom of it.

The stealer recently took most of the slack out of the driveline on my 2010 Puma and it's much more pleasant to drive but I still have that bloody awful rattle at certain throttle openings and it's worse when the thing is hot.
I also have a BAS Remap and was hoping this would help but it hasn't. What is the "injector learn" and how does it get done?
AlanH.

Just a thought but have you checked the security of the turbo and crankshaft position sensor heat shields? Steve.

Thanks Caterham
handbrake's fine and the other things you mentioned. I had a relearn but it was the first time my dealer has done one of those on a Defender so I don't know if they did it properly. I very much doubt its the EGR as its very quiet in self clean mode.

Its a bit oily at the base of one of the injectors but it hasn't got any worse so I don't know if thats got anything to do with anything

Just a thought. Like me you are adding 2SO to JASO FB spec. Have you tried adding 2SO to the higher FC spec? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

No I haven't checked them yet Steve but will do soon and after that I'll annoy the stealer again. Is this "injector learn" a mechanical adjustment or fiddling wiht the computer like with a remap?
Please advise.
AlanH.

alanh,

injector learn is via the ecu like a remap - my understanding is that its a learn process to fine tune the injectors so they fire precisely when they should.

for me I think it made the engine sound just a little crisper

I hope you get sorted.

I sure so are going to think I sound like an old record but I'm a little sensitive about my LR having endured years of problems....

anyhow not knowing how much you know about LR I would strongly recommend lossening off the hand brake adjuster by 1/2 to 1 turn and giving that a try just to see if it has any impact. if you know where the adjuster is its a fews seconds to do and a few seconds to put back where it was.

ps - I take no responsibility for the above and won't accept any claims should your truck implode, fall to pieces or start a civil war or anything else for that matter Very Happy

good luck.

So it's really something which needs to be done by a mechanic with the vehicle and a computer plugged in rather than by a remotely tuned remap as with BAS?
Sounds like another trip to the stealer.
Cheers.
Alan.

Can not be done remotely....

And ideally I'd want it done by a main dealer using SDD.

The correct process is pump learn and then pilot correction. The engine needs to at working temperature... I.e. nice and hot.

Thanks Ian, now I'll be able to tell the stealer how it's done! Laughing
Cheers.
