Breakdown troubleshoot
So...

Today I had my first breakdown in my new (to me) 90 2.4 puma. Shifting from 1-2 on a busy roundabout- crunch noises and a failure to engage gear and loss of power. Managed to nurse her onto the verge using diff lock/low range. My (albeit limited) initial research points to a problem with driveshaft if there is a loss of power in HR but still drives in LR. Any ideas? Cost of replacement/repair? So bummed right now.

Got recovered by wagon as towing led to a lot of unhealthy noise. All 4x4 specialist garages are shut around me on Saturday so currently had to get taken to brothers spot (no manoeuvring room at my place for truck) where its waiting before I can take it in on Tuesday Sad

If you put it into 1st and not difflock it won’t move (I would think) but what you may observe is one of the props spinning This will Indicate what end your problem is (front or rear) then look at drive flanges then diffs. Front diffs are weak in my experience. If you can not drive in high, but you can in low it will be the transfer box failed, but this is rare.

Moving it and still hearing crunching points even more firmly to a diff failure. They are at least easy to swap, especially the rear.

I hope they didn't try to tow it with the front wheels off the ground without disconnecting the rear prop?

If one of the diffs, half shafts, drive members or even a CV joint has failed I wouldn't expect this to prevent you from changing gear or crunching gears. If for example, a drive member had failed, hi/low wouldn't make a difference but diff lock would - I think you need to do more testing or wait until the garage assesses it.

Difficulty selecting a gear could be clutch failure, loose or broken gear selector, gearbox failure. If things work ok in low but not in high this would point to transfer box issue. Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon

Shocked Unsure about diff lock high didn’t try it? Didn’t get dolly towed, it was flat towed for all of 500 metres and we stopped due to noise and flatbed towed after a couple of hours- luckily I hadn’t gotten far at all so I could shank back to get my old car, which I’ve yet to decide whether to sell or keep ( this may have pushed for the latter, especially as I won’t get much for it anyway)

So now, need to get flatbed towed to the 4x4 garage on Tuesday, the flat bed driver recommended ringing AA again as they should honour it as all garages closed...the AA driver seemed to think they’re trying to clamp down on that now.

Droitwich 4x4 will have me in on Tuesday- I’ll know more then and keep you posted with what happens- gonna chalk it up as an early learning oppo. thanks for all feedback! Thumbs Up

Bit of a pain getting AA to get it moved to the garage- sent a regular patrol despite telling them needed a flatbed, but got another despatched eventually. Alls well ends well.

Worn drive splines and flanges... Not a horrendous job (I gather). Props to the 4x4 development who seem really professional- I’m sure I’ll be back.

Very Happy
