Travelling to New York - any advice
Off to New York at short notice with the other half and the kids next month.

Never been, infact it’s been years since I’ve been abroad full stop. The plan is to stay in the city for 4 days and then travel to A venue a couple of hours out for a family “do”.

Can anyone recommend any particular areas to visit, or things to go and see. Have already been advised that going to the LR dealer in Manhattan would not go down well.

Also need advice with regards to getting a hire car as we need to get from the city up to the mountains and then back to JFK after a few days

I worked there for a few years a while ago, depends on the length of your stay to make suggestions of places to see.

Walk the High Line, wander around Hells Kitchen, drink some great craft beers, have a sandwich from a deli, sit in a Soho pocket park & just watch, wander around Grand Central Station & toilets are generally in short supply so if you want the best lav in town go into the Ralph Lauren shop near Central Park. Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains

Going for 4 nights / 5 days before heading up into the mountains.

I will make having a poo in the Ralph Lauren shop one of my things to do! Laughing

The kids are 10 and 12 and reall easy going. We’re not into Disney/cheesey stuff but would like to still do the touristy stuff

Walk whilst there if possible. You will see and experience much more. We walked 110km in 7 days with a six year old in New York. She loved it.
Ground zero- very moving and quite eerie
Macys - just for the experience of the wooden escalator
Central Park. - well worth a visit and walk around.
Dylan’s- sweet shop for the kid in all of us.
Get a good guide and plan your days. Make the most and do what you enjoy.

My little girl is nine now and has travelled all over the world with us in tents to luxury hotels. New York is the place she asks to go back to.

Get Uber app and use it when the subway becomes too much to handle. Uber is cheap and easy. depending on where you are heading to the mountains you could Uber there too

for an adventure try Turo for a different and unique rental car experience (like airbnb for cars)

Wonderful City, you won't believe the atmosphere of the place until you sample it,...the city never stops, we felt, except for a small period 2-3am. Simpy an amazing place,...we expected to see Bruce Willis walk around the corner anytime.
Police on the ground everywhere, & very friendly.
Central Park, Times Square, Staten Island, Empire State Building, Statue Of Liberty, so much stuff,..ya'll make up your mind when you get there,....plenty of excellent city bus tours etc.
Enjoy, Pickles.

If not the Empire State Building then do visit the Top of The Rock. If you can, try and schedule your visit about an hour before sundown so you'll get to enjoy the transition from the landscape with beautiful autumn skies if you're lucky. Also, the elevator has a glass roof.
We stayed up there much longer than expected, think it must have been over 2 hours. Best memory of NY...

To me it was all about the size and buildings...

+1 for the High Line.

I'm off in November for 5 days done it all except the skyline that's on my list this year time I've been 4 times in total I love it.
Was thinking of catching the train to Philadelphia for the day but DC maybe sounds better.
