Optimill steering boss
Morning,

Come to fit our quick release boss this morning, the current mountney boss seems to slip on and off without to much pressure, the optimill one however seems very tight to fit on the splines? I can locate them on maybe 1mm of them , or is this correct? Suppose as the boss gets tighnted down it would go on further?

I suggest a quick count of the splines to make sure you have the correct boss

The 36 spline one on my Puma is tight. I always have to press it home screwing the nut in and have to use a puller to remove it.

Not saying that is right but perhaps not unusual.

Hmmm.... it will kind of located on around 2mm max of the splines, but I'm unsure about screwing it down incase it hasn't gone on correctly and damage the splines ?

I had what sounds like a similar problem. See the following thread:

https://www.defender2.net/forum/post933204.html

The tolerances are fairly precise. I got a replacement boss from Optimill and all was well.

Brilliant sounds exactly the same . I haven't messed around woth it to much as I didn't want to scratch it etc. Were they ok with taking it back for an exchange?

Customer service was excellent. I sent them some pictures, sent it back in good as new condition (like you, I was very careful with it) and a new one arrived by return, which slipped on very easily.

Likewise I had a 48 spline boss which wouldn’t drop far enough down onto the spindle to allow the bolt to secure it. I returned it after contacting Optimil and they sent me out a new one which fitted perfectly. It was obviously drilled out slightly more allowing it to drop sufficiently onto the spindle. Really good service from them.

Quick update- I rang Optimill they explained that obviously tolerances can be out on there part or ours- therefore carry bosses in stock that are marginally larger - New one being sent today- Customer service was brilliant. Fingers crossed new one fits
