2012 difficult to start
My defender exhibited its first reliability fault under my ownership this week.

During starting it cranked for a very short time before refusing to crank at all. I retried a few times but the engine failed to turn over until I armed and disarmed the alarm, after which it fired up fine.

Later this week when turning the ignition key, sometimes there's a short delay before the engine starts to crank, up to a second or so, after which it starts fine.

Is this more likely to be battery, earth, immobiliser problem or something else entirely? Now gone - 2012 2.2 110 DC XS

Following a trip to the dealer where I was predictably told they could not reproduce the cranking issue, I decided to have a go myself.

Two weeks ago I tightening the earthing bolt on the transfer box about a 1/4 turn, I also re-seated the spade connectors on the ignition switch. Since then the issue has not occurred again.

The fault may return, but so far so good. Now gone - 2012 2.2 110 DC XS

Hello justinp

Let's hope you have sorted it... Thumbs Up

Another possible problem area could be the Starter Relay, it may just be 'breaking down' or have poor 'intermittent' connections...(No. 3)

I had a similar starting issues (more all or nothing but the occasional 1 second of life then nothing) that was down to a rear connector on the ignition switch...
