Sounds like it might be the switch, with the ignition contacts opening up and cutting the power.

Great, Have to admit when I took the dashboard pod out and the lower panel, looking at fitting this part looks a right pain...

Very fiddly?

Hope it arrives soon

PS< it's been fine for 3 days again Smile

depending on what else cuts out, I am still voting for the crank sensor or wiring. V8 90...WIP

I've only done it on a pre-Puma and I removed the key barrel/column lock. However the Puma workshop manual suggests this is not necessary. I think this is because only one screw is now fitted not two.

Removal
1. Remove instrument cluster.
2. Remove steering column shroud.
3. Note position of harness leads on back of ignition switch and disconnect harness leads. If fitted, remove anti theft system passive coil from switch.
4. Remove single screw and withdraw ignition switch from steering column lock.

Installation
1. Fit new switch in steering column lock.
2. Connect harness leads to ignition switch.
3. If applicable, fit anti theft system passive coil.
4. Fit steering column shroud  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

This doesn't explain dash turning off completely, or things like indicators not working. Also it should appear as a fault in the ECU.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

After rereading the thread I would concur that the ignition switch itself is a likely contender and needs to be checked.

Removing and replacing the ingition key/lock/switch is a hassle due to the use of shear-bolts, but it occurs to me that you may be able to diagnose the switch by unplugging the four connectors from the old switch and connecting the new one in its place without actually fitting it. The new key switch could be operated with a screwdriver to simulate the key (remember though that the key will still have to be turned to release the steering lock). It would rather depend on access and how much slack there is on the wires.

The black connector (C0028) is the power in to the switch.
The green connector (C0099) is the power out in the Aux position.
The 'natural' connector (C0094) is the power out in the Run position.
The red connector (C0090) is the power out in the Crank position.

A further alternative which would be easy enough if you have suitable wire and connectors and are handy with vehicle wiring would be to make a simple harness to connect the black, green, and natural connectors together outside the switch. As you have a switch on order though it would be simpler to use the new switch.

Just another suggestion/question.

Is it possible for the vehicle alarm/immobiliser to kick in while the engine is running? Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

Possibly, but it wouldn't cut all ignition power.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I agree about indicators not working. But I know from direct experience it doesn't trigger an ecu fault. V8 90...WIP

Hello

I had a week out of it and all was ok then 300meters from my house the other day just leaving for work it did it again...

New part is here, garage who is fixing up my Series III will do it ( it needs front discs also) but as he's started the boot on the series I don't want to take him off this job to look at this one...

Will report back once switch is changed.
