4 point internal vs 6 point external SD cage
Hi,

I am trying to get a grip on the difference in protection between the safety devices L255 4 point internal cage and the L242 6 point external cage. The 255 seems great for the middle row but I'm just wondering how much protection the front row would get.

Not sure if anyone has been following this but I have received some great advice from some others on this site who say the internal cage should be paired with a front external cage. It essentially creates a partial or half cage for the front which is compatable with a rack. Thumbs Up 1999 Defender 110

The internal 4 point and an external front roll hoop is the way I intend to go eventually but I'd like some better picture of where they bolt to the chassis/body and how much room they take up. Also on this side of the pond insurers don't like roll cages as they think you are racing the vehicle Rolling Eyes Ray

You need some triangulation across the vehicle to really add some strength, so the internal hoop must have a diagonal tube.

The one I chose is an internal 4 point with an eternal front hoop, I don't notice any loss of space but I don't have any diagonal's going from front to back which would be better still.

^^ My insurance was very low too. APlan didn't mind any mods including remap, snorkel, roll cage etc.

I had the L148 in the end and must say I was surprised how little space inside was taken up. Couple of the usual SD ad snaps below:

Wow this is exactly what I had in mind Thumbs Up

Does the exterior portion of the cage bolt back onto the roof or does it somehow connect to the internal portion of the cage? Any issues with leaks?

Did you use the SD padding or something else?

Hi,

I got a similar cage on my Puma DCPU, front external / rear internal. The front part is bolted to the inner part through the roof, I have no problems with leaks so far (mounted for a year or so now).

I used SD padding on most of the inner part to get it approved by German TUV (similar to MOT).

As tmichael says, it bolts throuh the roof and there is a plate each side. I assume there is a gasket or sealant of some kind as no leaks yet. Touch wood.

Got the SD padding and 7 lengths did the areas they suggest (shoulder height and above). Very happy with it so far Very Happy 2002 Defender 110 CSW TD5

Steve-c3 your external front bars go over the top of the roof to the B post, where as I notice most go along the side to the B post, was this just your choice? I'd be keen not to add height to the roof.

Just as an aside, I have just ordered this one: -

I was thinking of going for the 6 point short one that goes up to the C post but carry at least one dog a lot of the time and couldn't live with myself if my skimping a couple of hundred quid on protecting his compartment meant he suffered.

Apparently quite a faff to install and i'm going to fit the optional B post diagonals if I can make them fit, although the padding kit is over £500 so will be going the Demon Tweeks route. I'm not really looking forward to fitting it but it will make me a lot happier as to the crash-worthiness.

I think (but i'm not sure) that the black 90 you show has a "cosmetic" front cage - not actually protective at all in the event of an accident.

The one I chose is specified for a 300tdi SW but as you will see in the pictures on their website is fitted to a Puma, which is exactly what I have. S.D. state that they don't recommend it because there needs to be a lot of interior trim changes/cutting in order for it to fit. However, it is the design I wanted so will happily sacrifice some bits of plasticky trim. They have sent me some marked-up pictures showing where the trimming needs to take place. I am more than likely just going to remove them as the load bed of mine is going to be further fitted-out for load carrying (dogs, guns, camping equipment, etc).

The Demon Tweeks route is to use individual lengths of cage foam to protect the areas I want protected but not at such massive cost - Demon Tweeks is a supplier of all sorts of Motorsport equipment in the UK.

I will of course post some pictures in due course.

Thon, that's brilliant thank you. The cage you link is certainly a lot more robust than the internal cage SD show for a Puma.

I stole the photo from Twisted but it is a SD 4pt 'Style bar' which appears the same as the 4-pt roll cage just bigger tubing. I believe both are structural (when linked to an internal cage) but welcome corrections? Bow down James
