Puma Prices
In my search for a Defender, other than falsely described cars, the most frustrating element is how prices are all over the place.

Has anyone else noticed how dealers seem to be ignoring the year of the PUMA and simply slapping a price on it based on model and spec. I know old classic cars are often priced this way - spec and model of the said car becoming more relevant than year - however, the PUMA is hardly a classic.

Today I found quite a few identical spec 90 SWs, 2007-2011, similar miles, same spec (XS) and all were priced at £21-22k.

So a 2007 XS with circa 60k miles - £21

2011 XS with circa 20k miles - £22

Seems mad to me.

Defenders seem to be one of the few motors that can be modified to increase value. If you modify most cars you usually decrease value.
If you buy a defender for £20k spend £5k on leather interior and £1000 on a remap. You can add the cost of these mods to the sale price.
I think you are not so much purchasing a car but a chassis number and a pile of parts. 2009 2.4TDCi XS Utility Wagon.

These are all stock cars - no mods. You do see some with tons of mods, asking big prices, but as someone who has been looking for awhile (6-months), these cars don't seem to sell and end up being reduced.

What I'm mentioning is the total lack of acknowledgment (in terms of price) regarding year with respect to value. 2007-2016 is a decent production run and there must be a sliding value scale; however, the only real different I can see is between 2.4 and 2.2 values.

To my mind, a 2007 2.4 cannot be worth the same as a 2011 2.4.

Values do seem to be all over the place. Rolling Eyes

With Land Rovers and the environment some are used in then condition can play a huge part. I would rather buy a 07 Puma with 60K miles and £18K which had been well serviced and looked after, than a 2012 vehicle with 20K miles but obviously well used with little service history for the same money.

I agree with any defender its all about condition and history, however I would say 2011 is the best year, still 2.4, low tax and no dpf and has the better traction control but not dsc

i would of course say that as I have a 2011 DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

2012 Puma 90 2.2 buying advice.....
Currently looking for a Puma 90 2.2 that I would need to part Ex my Ford Kuga for. I have my eye on one at Brooklyn 4X4 in Hampshire. It's a 2012 90 XS, one owner, immaculate bodywork, 41k miles for 27,995.

Although it's in excellent condition it seems a bit pricey!! Any opinions regarding price and any knowledge of Brooklyn would be most welcome.

Having said that, if the truck is clean, esp underneath, and ding-free it's well worth a good haggle, 1000's of defenders for sale at the moment - good luck with your search

I was approached by a chap the other day whom appeared serious and was in a new RRS who offered me £26k for my 90 xs 2011 which lives in a garage so is pretty tidy but not immaculate, interestingly it cost me less than that new 6 years ago!!

by comparison this is at lookers Solihull 9k miles, cleaned but not as clean as mine and already looks more used

There will be a fair few Puma's from 2015/16 arrive on the used market when the new Defender arrives. I have a few mates who bought one and it's really not liked by the family. It was bought as a first ever Defender and a must have accessory. To own a 'Defender' which feels and drives like an Ewok, they'll be out of the Puma like a shot.

That could put pressure on values for sure. 1951 80" S1 2.0

You may well be right if the new Defender is a more civilised vehicle, however there will always be the traditionalist who wouldn't be seen in anything other than a "proper" Land Rover, so good, clean and well maintained examples will always be in demand I feel. I would use the analogy of Harley Davidsons and Morgan cars vs Jap bikes and modern sports cars, many of these guys would not own and drive anything else.

Mate, they will. Wink

Buy a Defender, keep a Defender, for what it brings to you and your life. Not as an investment!

IMHO, IF they happen to go up in value, to the point that you decide to sell to make a few £k, then great! But surely the bottom line is to buy one, own one, get into the Defender 'DNA' and revel in that experience. Thumbs Up Cool YOLO... You Only Live Once...
