Strange LED's
Hi all, hope you can help in some way....
Well it started yesterday when i was driving back to home when i put my left indicator on and the bulb on the dash was alot dimmer than it should be, so i put the right indicator on and that worked fine as normal, so i assumed that the left indicator was working ok, but when i got home and checked them all was not ok Big Cry You put the left indicator on and all 4 indicators start flashing and they are dimmer than normal, so i thought it must be the relay, so today i bought a relay (i have wipac led's)and put it in and its still the same, so got to thinking and then plugged a light board in, (thinking the socket has had it) and it was very strange that the LED's worked normal again and the light board has bulbs in,i have had these on between 2-3 years with no proplems at all, so any thoughts are much appreciated, many thanks 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Check the earth, especially main earth straps.
A loose one can cause all sorts of odd issues. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Is the side indicator in the left wing also LED or is it incandescent? If the latter, and it failed, the resistance is wrong for the relay to operate correctly. Could also be an earthing issue there (at the left side indicator in the wing).

I would say earth - when the light board is plugged in it earths the indicators via the earth in the trailer socket thus full current can travel through the light units giving full brightness Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I assume you are using the Wipac LED Relay and not a standard one?

I have the RDX one and used to run for a time incandescent side repeaters and LED indicators and all was fine.

My bet is on an earth LED's are more sensitive to earth issues.

On a Puma there is the earth strap on the transferbox, there might be one on yours too?

When I had an issue with that one being loose I had brake lights light up when you indicate.
Dash lights flashing, all four indicators on the next and so on.
Cleaned and tightened the earth strap and all was good. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

You might have one there anyway, if not you'll soon see them underneath direct to chassis.
Any chassis ones be careful not to at all over tighten, they are good at shearing! Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Just to update you all, yesterday had the afternoon off due to the heavy rain, so went up to the store, parked the landy in the dry and set about to find the problem, unscrewed the indicator, cleaned contacts and while disconnected i turned on the indicator stalk to see if it would make any difference, but it did not, this was the nearside back after connecting back together i sprayed some GT85 in to help repel the water, then went on to do the same to the other 3 indicators but all the same, no difference, but i did not use GT85 on them because they were all bone dry Very Happy so still not working properly i switched on the hazard switch and they worked ok, but i noticed the nearside back indicator was NOT working at all Rolling Eyes so being there is not much room there, took it all apart and cleaned it up again, then connected it up again and then when my hand was up behind the thick plastic shield there is a metal type of shelf as you can see from the outside once the indicator unit is unscrewed and put the connected unit up there out of the way from all of the water, mud etc and then pushed the plastic shield back against the metal shelf to hold the connector up there and it has stayed in place Very Happy So checked the indicator was working again and was Thumbs Up so the big moment again and try the nearside indicator's, expecting that nothing has changed and to my surprise Surprised it is all working as normal now, so hoping it will last Very Happy 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up.
