It seems that there are some single DIN head units now that will accept a video input. OK, the screen's not very big, but probably equivalent to the screen size in a rear view mirror solution. The other option I have wondered about is getting a bluetooth camera and then linking that to my phone, which would be especially viable for those who already use their phone for sat-nav etc. so it is already on the dash. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

Can you get rear view wireless cameras that show the picture on your iPhone?

As you haven't got a rear view mirror, is that not the ideal place to mount a screen instead?

An interesting idea, though it would have to be a fairly teeny screen. I will investigate.

A few years ago I bought the bits to install one in my old 110. I didn't get around to it in the end, but it was my intention to fix the screen to the stem of the RVM:

The screen is about 4 inches across and gave a perfectly useful view.

With a cunningly crafted bracket, it would be possible to mount a screen using the RVM mounting point. Darren

In Discovery 2 I have small LCD (aprox 3,5") for reversing camera above the rear view mirror. And it works fine. I have it permanently on, not connected with the rear gear - for offroad use it is quite common to "reverse" downhill without changing gears, sometime also without touching the clutch pedal.
For night driving I just press button on the LCD to switch it off, because it shines a bit too much when it is dark. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

A 3.5" to 4" screen would be OK, I will look into this.

My Blackvue has front and rear cameras, and it is my intention (if I pursue the idea) to use the rear for reversing. The Blackvue does support bluetooth to a phone, but the time taken to set up and connect, and the issues of using a hand-held mobile make this impractical. (It might work if the phone was in a cradle and always connected, but it is way too much hassle to be a viable solution).

The blackvue doesn't allow you to flip the view either horizontally or vertically though. An unforgivable omission in an expensive setup. V8 90...WIP

How about one of these flip up screens. Could mount to the top of the dash or (if you can flip the image) on the roof.

This works well. Wired to reverse switch, camera in cross member next to tow bar. Once the rear window is tinted I might as well get rid of the mirror as I rarely use it at the moment. 2009 2.4TDCi XS Utility Wagon.

You may want to bear in mind that on a vehicle this recent, you must have an internal RVM if it gives you a view to the rear. In order to be able legally to get rid of it, you would need a 100% opaque tint on the rear window (which actually may also be illegal) or a solid bulkead between the driver and the rear of the vehicle.

It's hard to tell from the angle of the photo, but does that screen block your view of any of the swept area of the glass? The law only allows a maximum 40mm intrusion into the swept area of the windscreen, which is one of the restirctions I am finding causes problems. Technically anything over 40mm is not allowed and is an MOT failure.
