Take it off-roading, break it, have someone show you how to fix it. Soon you’ll know how to fix and maintain anything on an LR. 😉

Whilst I appreciate the intent, that sounds a bit like turkeys voting for Christmas Confused

Finally found a land rover defender mechanic willing to teach me how to service my own 300tdi! Very Happy

My shopping list before I assist him with the service as follows:
(1) 2x 5 litres of 1040 semi-synthetic engine oil
(2) 2x 5 litres of EP90 gear oil
(3) 1x 5 litres of manual gear box tqf dexon automatic transmission oil

I have googled the above but before purchasing, thought I should check with the experts on this forum.

(A) Appreciate recommended brands for the above please (this is for my 300tdi).

(B) Can someone kindly explain why in this case semi-synthetic oil is recommended and not fully synthetic oil? From what I have read, semi-synthetic is cheaper than fully synthetic oil, but won't reach the same levels of performance and engine protection. I understand my Puma uses fully synthetic 5w30, so why is semi-synthetic recommended for 300tdi?

Thank you! APK

The answer to your last question is to do with tolerances, with your 300tdi not built to the same as that of a Puma. The tighter the tolerances, the harder an oil has to work, which in turn requires a better performing oil. Fully synthetics tend to last longer as well and are responsible for the trend towards longer service periods.

You could put fully synthetic oil in your 300tdi but they cost more and there's really no great advantage in doing so. You won't be able to take advantage of their longevity as the tolerances of the engine will contaminate it quicker than the engines it was designed for. Darren

Understood. Thank you!
The mechanic did say it's better to get a cheaper oil and change it more often than a more expensive oil and less frequently.

Any particular brand you would recommend for the above items?
Much appreciated APK
