255/85r16 options
Hi all,

So I'm getting new tyres soon for my 90 and decided on 255/85r16s on Wolf rims.
Locally I have 3 options on that size:
BF KM2
Toyo Open Country MT
Maxxis Bighorn

Some comments:

BF KM2
Plus
- Best looking tyre ever IMO
- relatively light at 54,4lb
- had nothing but good experiences with BF so far
Cons
- the most expensive one here at €180,00
- may be a little undersized?

Toyo MT
Plus
- seems to be very hard wearing from what I read
- reasonable price at €165,00
- tall, 33.5"
Cons
- heavy at 60lb
- too stiff for a vehicle with a MGW of 2550kg?

Maxxis Bighorn
Don't know much about these ones, only some very contradictory reviews. Some say they wear fast, others the opposite.
The cheapest ones, occasionally they show up at €150,00

Any comments? Any experiences?
Thanks in advance

My car came with the Maxxis but in 25/85 guise.

Never haad Maxxis on a Defender before but will get them again to replace these when they wear too far to be aby good.

Very, very noisey - I love 'em to bits Thumbs Up Pants cornering grip on cold wet tarmac but they do allow for some great 4 wheel drifting. Absolutely no aquaplaning whatsoever - not at all!! Good towing on unmade surfaces and stand very rough farm tracks with ease.

I've had BFG and GG's in the past on previous LRs and I really can't say I prefer any over the others - perhaps my least favourite have been the BFGs but it's close run thing.

I woldn't worry about wear rate at all. The Defender, with solid axles, doesn't wear tyres. Just go for the one that ticks the most boxes for you.

Good luck with your own personal choice!!

Had GG's awful tyre's! KM2's now absolutely excellent.
Just be careful and mindful of what they are so don't slam the anchors on in the wet, drop speed a bit to take that into account. Been running a few years now and been very very please.

^^^^ As above, they are road biased tyre's and awful.
They are just like tread you'd see on a van only LR sized.
They were rubbish on road, and verb worse off it.

GG AT2 - very similar to the BFG in tread but a slightly different profile. I like the way the GGs look compared to the BFG but that's about it.

Mind you, does anybody else get the feeling that some of the MT tyres actually give better grip on cold wet tarmac that the ATs (BFG, GG, etc)? I'm convinced the Maxxis mine came with are better than the BFGs my 110 DC had but it hasn't been a back to back test so probably wishful thinking Very Happy

Like I said before, no interest in General tyres here.
I want a MT 255/85R16 tyre

We run 255/85/16 BFG both on modular and dare I say on Zu Rim?.

Am planning on fitting BFG M/T 255/85/16 on the grey 90. Choice of rim not decided upon yet

We get typically 60,000 miles + out of a set. We normally retire them when they have 3-5 mm tread left/getting tired at about 7 years old.

I've run BFG KMs and KM2s in 255/85/15 for the last 17 years now but must admit to having moved the BFG AT KO2 now.

Way more refined on the road, far quieter and better in the snow and ice. The KM2 isn't a winter rated tyre where the KO2 is.

Can't comment on wear on the AT's yet, but 60-70k is easily doable on the KM/KM2

They don't do the 255/85 however in this pattern so am running 285/75/16 which are the same height but a tad wider.

Yes, the KO2 is tempting, but I still don't trust it in mud or very loose/thin dirt.
I wouldn't mind opt to a 285/75r16 tyre, but only if it was a clearly better thread.

By the way, I mentioned I was going for Wolf rims.
My current wheels are 16x7 Modulars. They are tough, rust free (3 years in a very saline environment) and hold air incredibly well. The are, however, incredibly ugly to my eye.
Anyone has experience with both Wolfs and Modulars so can compare them?
I still might keep my current rims. I'll get a fuller wallet ad it might be easier in the future to opt for 285/75R16 tyres (I'm a little afraid the 255/85R16 will extinguish in the near future...)
