Not strong enough even with a 90 gross weight? I never had problems with mine, but never went offroad with a full expedition weight either...

Do you mean 255? A lot of tyre choice is down to looks, bling whatever you care to call it but there are many other reasons behind it

255 85 16 are a nice sized tyre, not to wide, remain proportional to the vehicle but at approx 33 " tall they do lift the diff which can make a big difference when off road / laning etc Especially if you are following something on smaller tyres.

I agree. The extra height of 255/85īs is a bonus, lifting the diff away from the floor, and the longer gearing is quite useful on road. 255īs are actually larger in diameter than 285īs. Hereīs the four most popular sizes with diameter comparison.

265/75 16 804mm
235/85 16 806mm
285/75 16 834mm
255/85 16 840mm 1998 Tdi 90 SW,
2008 Td4 90 SW,
2012 2.2 90 SW,
2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma
Heavy Track Raids, 255 MTīs,
Recaro CSīs, anorak, wellingtons

I like the looks of the stock 235/85R16, but a bigger tyre:
- offers more diff and axle clearance. Sometimes 1" is all you need;
- longer footprint means more flotation on sand or other deep soft terrains
- more volume means less necessary pressure for the same vehicle load/weight, which in turn means more traction and more comfort

Never seen a definitive answer - in reality, there's probably been multiple supply contracts for them from Land Rover, and some contracts may have even run in parallel.

A batch of 7 or 8" wide wolf wheels with a touch more offset would be very popular I think 😀

an ideal for me would ba 33.9.5R16

255.85 in an MT and 285/75 on an AT are the closest i can get to the height for under diff clearence Cheers

I think I agree with you jst.

You used to be able to get Michelins in something like 8.25 or 8.5R16 but they're very rare.
It's annoying you can only really get MTs in 255, and have to go for 285 if you want a 33" tyre in an AT pattern.

You nailed it. Something like a 16x7j, +8mm offset.
I wounder if anyone has the contact of the Spanish company that makes some of the modulars around. That would be an interesting group buy. Production wise it wouldn't be too hard, it's just a modular rim with a Wolf navel instead.

Ended going the 255/85R16 KM2 + Wolf route.

The tyres are quite tall, measured 33,5", BF could sell them as 34s or 34x10R16 and people would swallow the advertised size. I've seen new 35" tyres measuring just 10 or 15mm over that.

Next to the 235/85R16 BF ATs:

Interestingly, the actual contact patch is about the same width as the 235 ATs, about 185mm:

The 90 now has a proper stance:

Our Disco 300 is starting to feel tiny next to the 90

Nothing new to report on the road, except you feel the tyre bending a little more on hard corners.
On cobblestones is much more comfortable, kind of like when you go from a 26" mtb to a 29er.
Can't wait to try them offroad
