Misfires are back!
So my brand new distributor cured the misfires for a little while but now they're back. Anyone have any ideas as to how a misfire would occur at about 30mph when the engine is under load and cold? When the misfire occurs it sounds like it looses four cylinders! I've run out of ideas so asking on here is a last ditch attempt before I go to a specialist and pay a lot to get it sorted.

Edit: The misfire doesn't occur once the engine has warmed up thoroughly, still get the misfires around 70-75mph but they can be felt and avoided. 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

Did you replace the ht leads? I once had an issue I chased for ages. It was perticularly bad on a dark foggy evening and when I opened the bonnet it was like a mini Blackpool illuminations. Shorting out everywhere they touched. You certainly couldn't see it in the daylight or if it wasn't damp.

Is it dampness related? Does it happen in dry weather conditions as well? My V8 Discovery was a nightmare a marigold glove and a few strategic cable ties on the leads exiting the fingers sorted it for me. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Only you can answer that. I fitted magnacor leads and they would run under water. It was only a suggestion. The Lucas type your talking about, does it have a black and white external module. If so I recall theses being quite unreliable but replaceable. I'm Shute someone with a more current memory will be along shortly 👍

I've replaced the ignition amplifier a month ago when it was shorted out by loose swarf in the dizzy. Haven't replaced the coil as it was new in June along with the ignition leads. Is it something which could break in such a short space of time? 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

Yes, that's the amplifier I have. I would try magnacor leads except they're something stupid like £150. A lot of money when they may or may not help. Will have a look at the engine running tonight to see if I have any shorting sparks. 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

Worth mentioning that just that it's a new electrical part, doesn't mean it's any good.

I've had faulty coils, condensers, points that didn't work etc, I have had a champion plug that didn't work out of the box!
Even the branded Lucas parts are of questionable quality nowadays.
A lot of the aftermarket ignition stuff is rubbish, I always get parts from the Distributor Doctor, or N.O.S if you can find it.

May be worth doing a compresion test, just to make sure everything inside is as it should be? 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Just checked the engine in the dark for the wires shorting out and see no sparks, can't really test it under load like when it generally happens though.

I will look at buying a new coil, can't afford a Bosch one as I heard they're good, are there any aftermarket ones that're any good? Accuspark and Stealth are two affordable ones that come up when searching. I have a plans to do a compression test and a leak test as the engine has drunk a fair amount of oil since the last proper oil change in May. 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

I decided to go all out and buy a Bosch ignition coil, go big or go home as they say! Anyway, I fitted it this afternoon and took it for a test drive when it was stone cold. Gave the engine a good hammering and not a single misfire (yes I know it's not healthy but for the sake of accurate results I did it once)! Tonight I will take her down the A27 to test for the high speed misfires and will update the post with the results.

Thanks Ian and Greeni for suggesting it's the coil Thumbs Up 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon
