I had this problem with a 3.9 range Rover that I owned, I tested everything and decided that it was deffinately the ignition, so I replaced all the components, including the distributor. It was ok for a while and then started back firing again, so after replacing parts sometimes several times over and always eventually ending with the same problem I eventually got fed up and rang one of the manufacturers technical department. I had a long chat with a bloke who seemed to know his stuff and at the end of the conversation and off record he advised me to only use genuine Land Rover parts. Expensive but I tried it and never had another problem.

Found someone who's into v8s who also has a rolling road not far from me so will probably pay him a visit in the new year to have a good look over while running. Everything is bolted up tight, don't know if it's all to the exact torque recommendations but it's tight enough to not fall apart. The rotor arm and distributor parts were new. Jon were these non genuine parts OEM? I've been sure to use genuine or OEM parts (no sh*tpart). 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

Right found a few different people selling pairs of carburettors except they're all from SD1 engines. I think the needles would be different but apart from that is anything else different? 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

I used genuine Land rover as I was advised. I know OEM should be the same but it clearly isn't, in my experience. Jon |

I think your best best is to get an SU refurb kit from Burlen - the carbs are very simple to work on & it wouldn't take that long to do Richard Defender 90 SVX |

The kit's are quite a bit cheaper as well.
Today I checked the dashpots and one felt completely empty, no resistance at all when removing the damper. I filled it up with some ATF and put a bit in the other carb to be safe. I then took it for a test drive, first time running today and no misfires. OK, having dashpot oil in both carburettors had no effect on the misfires. Found a rather cheap pair of refurbished Hif44 carburettors I got my eyes on now

Precisely, used to rebuilt lawn mower carburettors for fun so that should be right up my alley

I just read this on d90 source, a guy restoring a NAS 110.... Interesting to see what he said about the coil...
I should mention I glossed over a few things which were also done during the rebuild process - as I mentioned the drivetrain was basically new but I still had a fair share of mechanical issues to address before, during, and after the work especially since it sat for 3-4 years in there when the work was getting done: - Went thru 3 coils - one replacement was DOA - second died after starting the truck twice - third one was OEM and still going strong - Replaced fuel pump as the original stopped working somewhere in there - Decided to replace the gas tank at the same time since was pulling it anyway for the fuel pump - glad I did this as it was getting nasty - Replaced fuel sender to trace back why gas gauge wasn't working - forgot the rubber gasket and went to fill up the truck only to have fuel pour out the sender opening - had to drive it home 2 miles because it was dumping fuel all over the gas station parking lot - not good....I was sure my truck was going to burn down as others have in the past (though my oil cooler lines have been updated) |

Interesting indeed. Replacing the ignition coil didn't change my misfires for better or worse though
I have just won a pair of refirbushed and tested SU carburettors on ebay so once they finally arrive I can get them fitted and see if the problem is gone.
