Jedburgh would seem to meet your requirements. In the Borders with lovely local shops and tea rooms, plenty of walks and about 40 min south of Edinburgh.
Peebles is nearer to Edinburgh and still in the Borders. Peebles Hydro was a good place to stay, although haven't been for a few years. Perth is a larger place,on a river and about 40 mins north of Edinburgh.Plenty of trains to Edinburgh if you have had enough driving. Also ideally placed for visits around Perthshire. You are really spoilt for choice - VisitScotland.com is a useful guide for further advice and places to stay. |

don't bother driving into Edinburgh, parking can be quite expensive

Good suggestions from Balvaig, I think Perth is a great location, so much to see in the area. I love the border as Northumbrian, and Jedburgh is lovely and you've Alnwick and Holy Island, if you didn't mind heading back over the border! I'm with bpman on Edinburgh traffic, without doubt avoid the by-pass during rush hours. I ofetn use the park and ride at the airport, and get the tram in and out of the city Sold Def 90 HT 2010...Stornaway..(SOLD in Oct 2014)

Just back from a week in Melrose which is not that far from Jedburgh and beautiful. A good tip though is book any train tickets to Edinburgh online as it is cheaper

The Fife coast might be worth a look Crail, Anstruther, Elie, etc. Easy enough to get to a train station for a day in Edinburgh (as others have said better than driving) and some lovely places to see. Also, as mentioned above, Perth is very central and Highland Perthshire beautiful.

Stirling is the place you're looking for. Equi-distant from Edinburgh/Glasgow/Perth. Great train service and only one part time traffic warden with loads of free spaces. Ten minutes to the Trossachs and thirty from the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. Head north to beautiful Perthshire with Dunkeld and Pitlochry and hour and a bit away or head up the West coast for scenery to die for.
Stirling has many good bars and eateries which wont deflate even a Defender owners wallet. Stirling Castle and Wallaces monument a must do also. PS.... If you want the best indian food in Scotland try the Green Gates in town. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS.. |

Newcastleton is just over the border (Carlisle 40 mins - turn right at jnc 44) and has excellent forest walks, 7Stanes cycling, new cyclng skills park, 3 great pubs, handy for Kielder Forest / Water with birds of prey centre, etc plus forest drive. Handy for Jedburgh, Langholm (the Muckle Toon), Hawick, Selkirk, Kelso, etc, etc.
Drive to Gala' and take the new rail link to Edinburgh. 9 hole golf course (pay & play). Some excellent accomodation ranging from 5 star self catering down to basic stuff. Small but perfctly formed caravan site |

I currently live out by Linlithgow - not that I am particularly suggesting that's the place to go... (but it's OK, with the Linlithgow Palace and a couple of nice pubs/restaurants)
However I will suggest using the Park and Drive from Ingliston (next Edinburgh Airport). So long as you avoid morning rush hour (0730-0900) you will drive there easily (from the South, North or West) and you can leave the car for free, and use the TRAM into town.
