Noise from front of engine - unhappy bearing
Hope some one can help with info - at the end of last week just after I started the engine there was a nasty scream / rumble for about a second, then it was OK. It has done it a couple of times since always when cold.

I thought it was the inner idler as I sprayed a little grease on the centre and it seemed better - no noise next morning so I ordered and fitted a new one tonight - 8loody noise came back.

When I take tension off the belt, there is no noticeable play anywhere but I can hear an unhappy bearing somewhere at the front of the engine.

I intend to take the viscous fan off tomorrow to isolate that, but if its the pulley it sits on LR031367 seems damned expensive as its a complete unit, can the bearing be changed on its own?

I cannot make the noise happen by switching on the A/C, lights, steering etc.

Cheers Keith

small update

doing a detailed search of microcat it looks like the correct part number (if that is the faulty bearing) is PQS500520, which has been superceded by PQS500620 - still nearly £200, so same question, can the bearing be changed?

Cheers Keith

Thanks but no that was the one I replaced tonight, it's the central Hub the fan screws on.

I've searched masses of articles and forums but can't find if the bearing is replaceable -I don't even know if that's the fault yet just trying to get my ducks in a row.... !

Will look again tomorrow as I've got a long run to France next week and it will worry the hell out of me if its not100 per cent

Cheers Keith

Hi Daniele

The pictures of the transit part are very different to the defender one - or do you know if the bearing can be changed for a transit one?

cheers Keith

Guess the price is for the whole assembly. You can change the bearings separately, I noted and marked the bearingnumber. These bearings are standard and you should get them anywhere.

Thanks for the responses, still no nearer though...

Struggled to undo the viscous fan, 36mm spanner, no good.
Spanner plus hammer - no good
Chisel on edge of flat - no good
18v Makita SDS on chisel only mode - instant success!!!!!

Noise still there with fan removed.

Dropped belt off, no noise so external to engine.

I can find no massive play anywhere & all pulleys turn nicely. Fan pulley has a little play in it, but turns smoothly. Would this be enough to give noise / harshness when under load & cold?

Cheers again

I can only guess, but yes, there should be no play at all. You will have to get the whole part then.

Thanks to everyone for help, managed to relocate plastic bracket under filter onto its lugs, then held it in place with finger clamps and then riveted.

No grumbling from bearing now, although not sure it was the source of the main noise so difficult to track down something that is intermittent, cold start only and only lasts for a second or two at most...

I will have a look at the old bracket tomorrow and post bearing number if I can see it

Thanks again Keith
