Going 16 to 18 planned but is my maths wrong?
Evening all,

Posted this in the Bowler thread and then realised it was a bit of a hijack so posted it here instead…

So, I'm on the verge of going Bowler 18 on my 110. Two questions to those with better maths/ experience than me…

Will going up from a 235x85 16" to a 265x65 18" mean a higher ride height for the car? My shonky maths puts it as raising the height of the vehicle by about 10-15mm. But I am quite prepared to be corrected as I got an 'E' in Maths.

Have those that have 18 Bowler'd (or other) their Defenders and put these pics up here also lowered them? Or is it generally accepted to fit as they come and leave them?

The insurance company's fine with the wheel change. POssibly won't be with any other mods, but I'd rather not have it raised any more.

Thanks in advance of any help - much appreciated.

Going by the numbers, your overall diameter on the current ones is:

(0.85+0.85)*235 = 399.5mm
399.5/25.4 = 15.7"
15.7+16-31.7"

And the new ones:
(0.65+0.65)*265 = 344.5mm
344.5/25.4 = 13.6"
13.6+18 = 31.6"

Your new wheel and tyre combination is all of 0.1" or 2mm of a reduction in diameter over the old ones which is less than the amount of wear you get in a tyre. That's really not an issue and won't noticeably change the height.

Wheel diameter will be the same give or take a few mm. You'll need your maths so not to work out how much more the 18" alloys and tyres will cost you compared to 16". Rolling with laughter James

Someone double check please but:

original from axle minus new from axle:

8*25.4 + 235*0.85 - 9*25.4 - 265*0.65 = 2.1mm Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Thanks all.

Cupboard - that's what I wanted to hear. Wink Did you get an 'A'?

JOW - cost? Don't. It all began as a very different prospect than what it ended up as. Wheels are the cherry.

Just for the sake of crossing eyes and dotting teas, keep in mind that only half of that determines vehicle height. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

TJ , AgentMulder,

Ti-Fat Man on here would concur that I have been known to change 2mm spacers on mountain bikes and 'feel' a difference…. Rolling Eyes Laughing

Thanks all. Really helpful as ever.

The Bowler 18" in anthracite is my absolute favourite wheel. Whilst I might justify to myself the one off extra cost of the alloys, the 18" tyres are 30% more than the equivalent 16", for less tyres!?! KO2 in 16" are roughly £132 where as 18" are £176!! Could I justify this?? I don't know.... Tempting Shocked James
