insurance and remaps
I am looking to buy a 90 td5 and there are some advertised with a few modifications and remaps, i don't think modifications like tree sliders and wheel carriers would affect insurance but how much does performance upgrades like remaps and tuning boxes make to the premium.

Unfortunately it depends on the insurer , your age, location and numerous other factors so there isn't a specific pounds and pence answer to the question . It is a case of asking for quotes through the usual channels and see what the cost is for your circumstances.

There is a forum sponsor , A plan who can offer some guidance but always worth getting quotes elsewhere as well.

My insurer ( Privilege ) want to see the details of a remap before quoting and they do also charge an admin fee for in policy changes. HR064 Hampshire and Berkshire 4x4 Response

I've gone with the forum sponsor APlan declared all mods (I feel its essential to declare everything!) wheel spacers, steering guard etc etc plus a 150Hp tune and they quoted slightly less than previous insurer (LV). LV were happy with tune but wouldn't insure for green laning.

Just upgrading to 170hp tune and APlan have added £30 to premium.

But unless it is a completely standard Defender I do feel its very important to ring them up to get a quote and not reply on price comparison sites. Thumbs Up James

You need to take care.

If you have a crash, and an accident management/blame and claim company get involved, they may well get the Landy checked for remaps and other items which will mean you may not get paid out.
These companies are employed (amongst other things) to find ways to get the insurance company out of paying out, such as undeclared modifications.

It depends on what has happened. Obviously if the Landy was stolen/recovered you couldn't argue a remap makes any difference.

But if you've had a crash then it might be a different story.

Declare everything, if you don't your insurance is likely to be void.

Worse case when you're faced with huge repair bills/damages (not for your motor, but those you might hit) you'll be bankrupt.

If you're not going to declare then you might as well not have insurance at all.

Just my opinion of course...Smile

Cheers

Simon

I agree.

Told mine, they said it couldn't be insured full stop, until the fact that it was a diesel was realized in passing, 'oh well that's fine' was the result. No additional fees.

Again another timely question Very Happy .

My AF renewal came through last week for the 110, as it is off to CSK for an EGR removal and ALIVE remap I just gave them a call and mentioned the upcoming plans.

They did ask what the power increase would be, which Chris stated in the region of 160, but who really knows?

They added £45 to my policy which I am more than happy with plus it gives me piece of mind for when I drive it home from CSK next week. He who dies with the most toys wins Smile

I'm currently with AF and generally they don't charge much more than an admin fee for new modifications. Having said that, I'm going to be looking at A Plan when mine comes up for renewal after reading the way AF deal with claims !

I declared a remap when i got the quote for the 90 i am picking up tomorrow, not sure how much extra as i had cancelled the insurance when i sold the disco 3 last month and started it again, but they said it depends on the gains, up to 10%, 10%-25% and 26% and above which they wont cover so i said i didn't know the gains and went for up to 25%, haven't declared anything else, there is a steering guard and some checker plate but that's it.

After my 110 TD5 was remapped it produced so much smoke when l floored it that it completely obscured the vehicle l'd just passed.
I thought the turbo had failed, but removing the remap returned it to normal.

I started reading that thread but gave up on page 2 when the thread starter didn't realise that AF were only a broker and not the actual insurance company Shocked
When I insured mine AF offered an Axis policy and A-plan offered a Markerstudy policy for a higher premium. Went with AF.
