I had the same problem with mine just after I bought it, and believe it or not, it was the brake light fuse. The vehicle would run-on terribly, and the revs would rise dramatically when the clutch was depressed, and only after some investigation did I find out that the brake light fuse had blown. I replaced the fuse and problem solved. I then towed my shorty a couple of months later, and blew a fuse again, and the symptoms reappeared. Check to see whether your brake lights are working, and if they are, check the circuit anyway.

I've got a TD5 Defender but my business runs a Transit Connect TDCi. While the engine is generally a good unit, it does have various "issues" which seem to be mainly software related.
one such problem on the Transit is that the engine will "lurch" forward while you are accelerating when it is not fully warm. Another is that in freezing weather it "shunts" at about 1700rpm as if it can't decide whether to go or not.
The dealer has been unable to fix these "faults".
